Returns seems that that was Burton doing the film he really wanted to do, as opposed to the result of a push-and-pull with the studio, which feels like the first film. I still don't think of Returns as a great Batman movie, but it is just a better movie in general, and works at what it is trying to do. And I'll take that.
Returns is the only one I can re-watch anymore, although frankly it's not great, just beautiful in terms of design and atmosphere.

Batman Returns on the other hand is close to a masterpiece. Hiring Daniel Waters was one of the best things they did. The dialogue in this movie is incredible especially from Penguin and Catwoman, “I’ll murder you momentarily”, “I wouldn’t touch you to scratch you”.
And it looks gorgeous. The set design is much more interesting and consistent in this one and the photography is gorgeous. The way Catwoman pops in the 4K is truly something. :)
Casting is spot on, Walken is Walken and both DeVito and Pfeiffer are truly extraordinary. Both award winning performances and they both utterly transcend the form. Keaton is Keaton but is better here with a better script. 8.5/10
A sentimental favourite but we experience this film very differently. I don't think it's terrible by any means but it's got more style than substance for me, although I do enjoy the depiction of Bat and Cat as two broken people.

Saw The Brutalist last week.
9/10
Amazing is all I can say. It's one of those movies that feels and looks like an actual movie experience without having to be sci-fi / fantasy "spectacle".
The cinematography is beautiful, the music and sound design are amazing, the acting is top notch, the story keeps you immersed... everything works. Watch it on the biggest screen you can find.

My only criticism is the very on the nose Israel message. There's two or three scenes that really lay it on quite a bit too thick, and they really didn't need that to get the overall message across.

Yeah I really have to see this at a cinema - shot primarily with a single VistaVision camera. The last film shot completely in VistaVision was Brando’s One-Eyed Jacks in 1961!

The Gorge -- 7/10

Decided to give this new Anya Taylor Joy movie a try and thought it was surprisingly pretty decent. The story is about as uncomplicated as can be (two people standing guard over a gorge full of monsters), and plays out pretty much like you'd expect, but there are still some good scares and action sequences throughout.

The Reanimator: 6/10

Loved this film as a kid, gore, nudity, zombies, mad scientists....what's not to love?

Older me , not so much due to gore , nudity, zombies and mad scientists....and most of it is badly done, horribly acted and way too over the top silly....

I appreciate what you are saying, but I feel this was all perfect given the tone of the film. My appreciation of Jeffrey Combs has only grown over the years.

From Beyond was made about a year later, also based on a Lovecraft story with the same director and primary cast members, but isn't quite as silly (with the cat, head, naked body. . .). Though it has its moments.

Combs is a national treasure, the over acting was mostly the entire rest of the cast.
