Just got my second Samsung the other day (LED this time, ah yeah boy).

Best TV's I've ever had, bar none.

Meh. I'm anti-Samsung after 2 Tvs that have died in the past 3 months.

~~Do you have a price range? I'm asking because Sears of all places is having a sale, and I just picked up an LG 50" Plasma for $850. So far I've watched 3 movies on it and it looks outstanding so far.

You can get more TV for less money if you go DLP. I bought a 72" for $1399 Thanksgiving week ... 65" was $999. Picture is great. I think its a Magnavox.

Parents have a Sony Bravia 240hz and it very nice and has been great for the year they had it. I have a Samsung LCD that has been great for over 2 years and a new Samsung 3D Plasma that has great.

I would personally go either with an LED LCD or a Plasma. I will warn you if you go plasma be carefull if you spend a lot of time on a channel with a static graphic (ESPN for example) you will get burn in.

Are you sure you want to just go 46 inches? The price difference between the 46" sets and slightly bigger ones isn't that much. Bigger televisions usually amount to a more immersive experience. Here is a link that provides a viewing distance calculator that determines the theroetical best size tv for a particular viewing distance:

In answer to the original question, I recommend going plasma with the panasonic viera series. Picture quality rivals or beats the nicer LED sets and they are cheap. An interesting deal on panasonic plasmas can be found at:

Burn in doesn't happen much at all anymore, the newer Plasma's have technology built in to prevent it. I have had no problems whatsoever with burn in.

:lecture there's an option on my TV to do a "color wash" to help prevent this.

~~DLP is a no-no anymore. Cheap yes, but replacing the bulb, color wheel, and/or DLP chip = hell no.

Plasmas are only good if you have a darker veiwing area, if you have a really bright room then a Plasma is going to suck. That said Plasmas generally have better pictures than LCD's.

I watch my plasma in my lighted living room all the time and it looks fine. In fact, I rarely turn off all the lights. They have gotten a lot brighter over the last couple years and the newer pansonic vieras are known to be especially bright.

Plasmas have nice blacks, that is about it.

DLP's are a great value, but friggin huge.

Plasmas are cheaper too, which is nice. You can get a set with really nice picture quality at the same price as a low-mid quality LCD set. The enregy consumption on plasmas is a bit higher, but unless you keep the tv on all the time, it probably doesn't make a huge difference.

About having nicer blacks...having nicer black levels adds more contrast to the picture, which helps in getting better saturation and reducing the chance that the picture will look "washed out" and dull. It can make a huge difference.

This is actually a great time to buy a new TV as manufacturers overstimated demand and retailers are now stuck with a lot of stock. That means its deal time!
