Yes if I recall correctly re4 was looked at with raised eyebrows. Besides Leon , we had no connections to the re lore. Every thing they showed in the re4 trailers was a mystery and we didn't know what those villagers were.

This could go down the same. Change the game heavily and now it becomes a classic game . Hey who knows.

They tried with re6 with smashing everything in and yea it turned out to be garbage.

Sure, for the version of RE4 we actually got. The original gameplay trailers made it look like a mix between classic RE and Silent Hill. There are fans who would still rather have that version of RE4.

What Ironwez said still rings true for that version as well. That version was met with questions. Why ghosts? Weirdness. All we had to go on was that Leon was potentially infected with the progenitor virus. Yet...you could still sense RE in it. The gameplay still looked RE even if it had the supernatural vibe running through it.

I believe that version was referred to as the "Hallucination" version. So I'm sure we would have found out it was due to a virus. I dunno. To me it seems more RE than the final project. While it's a very enjoyable game, it almost seems like a spin off. Or at least it did at the time. To be honest, if you swapped Leon and Ada out of it, it might as well have been something else.

I'm hoping RE7 has some original juice in it. First person combat is usually terrible, with the exception of the condemned games.
I'm hoping you're pretty defenseless in 7, much like you are in Silent Hill.

I 100% agree that RE4 feels like a side story. It feels like it should be called something like "Parasite attack". :lol. Besides a few nods and a few ripple effects into RE5 it doesn't have much effect on the series.

But wasn't there a time, a very short period of time, when resident evil wasn't doing very well and they wanted to switch the formula? After code Veronica wasn't there another game that was on a boat? It sucked a lot. Also I believe re0 was met with lukewarm praise. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're thinking of Dead Aim and Gaiden, ironwez. But you're right on RE0

RE4's story is weird in the long run...outside of the 'no more zombies' thing, and how it confirmed the end of Umbrella/what some of the new characters were at this point.

It most definitely didn't feel like resident evil. Once you go into the castle everything goes goes crazy lol
