Re: Rise of the Apes

This is not a prequel to the original movies. Nor is it one for the Burton reimagined version. It will be it's own beast. Fox wants Burton's version to be the beginning of a whole new franchise... but he didn't quite deliver. However the box office receipts from Burton's version proved that there is strength in the Planet of the Apes name.

So they are re-rebooting the franchise again... this time they are starting with a reimagining the original Conquest film with Caesar as the central character. Just call it "The Rebooting of the Reimaging of the Planet of the Apes."

Try and fit THAT on a marquee! :thud::thud::thud:

Personally they should just do a more faithful adaptation of the book IMO.

Re: Rise of the Apes

To be honest, I've never been a big fan of Boulle's novel. Even Pierre himself thought of it as one of his lesser works.

But whatever punch that original novel had, I think that both the original classic film and the Burton Remake uses about 80% of that punch. There is not that much left of the novel that hasn't been mined.

Besides, Fox wants a long fruitful franchise with POTA. And the Boulle book reads more like a one-off.

Re: Rise of the Apes

Looks like James Franco is playing the lead.

20th Century Fox has set James Franco to star in Rise of the Apes, the Rupert Wyatt-directed prequel that the studio has dated for a June 24, 2011 release. Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark are producing with Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. Silver and Jaffa wrote the script.

Production begins July 5. Franco and Wyatt met last week and sparked to a collaboration, giving production president Emma Watts a whopping tent pole for summer, 2011. It's the second in recent weeks, after she set Matthew Vaughn to direct X-Men: First Class, which is set for June 3, 2011 release.

The film is set in contemporary San Francisco, where a genetic engineering experiment leads to the creation of intelligence in apes, causing an inevitable conflict between species. Fox has already partnered with Peter Jackson's WETA Digital for the cutting edge visual effects. Franco plays a young scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes.

Makes sense that the studio would be high on Franco right now because they've recently seen his work in 127 Hours, the Danny Boyle-directed fact-based drama. Franco plays Aron Ralston, the hiker whose arm got pinned under a boulder for hours. He was forced to saw off the limb with a dull knife and found the strength to climb down the mountain.

Re: Rise of the Apes

John Lithgow has joined the cast. Sadly he isn't playing an ape.

Our readers seem mixed as to whether 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes is a good idea or not. I'm not a huge POTA fan, but I think there's plenty of good social fodder in the series that deserves to be reexamined in this day and age. Even if political commentary isn't your cup of tea, the cast might be. According to THR's Heat Vision, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow have joined James Franco for Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Apes.

As Peter Hall reported last month, Franco is playing the young scientist who is trying to discover a cure for Alzheimer's, and is part of a team who experiment on apes. One ape evolves, and Franco becomes attached to him, and takes him home to prevent him from further exploitation. Lithgow will play Franco's father, who has been stricken with Alzheimer's Disease. You and I both know Lithgow will knock this out of the park, so his addition alone is probably worth the price of admission.

Pinto will be playing the female lead, "a primatologist." Presumably she'll also be a love interest for Franco. Someone is bound to make remarks that primatologists aren't as lovely as Pinto, and all I have to say to that is Jane Goodall. Journalists complained she should have been a fashion model. So there you go.

Apes begins shooting this summer. It may be a "reboot", but like Logan's Run, it has some potential. I think it's going to be one of the more promising things on pop culture's radar.

Andy Serkis is playing Caesar, but...

No one seems to care about this movie. :lol

So far I'm liking the cast.

Re: Rise of the Apes

Today is the first time I have heard of this movie.

I Like POTA very much and I will see this movie...I sincerely hope it is good. The cast shows great promise.

The release appears to have been moved to November, though.

I've been waiting for a look at the character design of the apes in this film. I'm impressed!

Thanks so much for posting this.

Nevermind, I just saw on the wiki page that they are done digitally. Let's see how real they look, but that teaser is definitey impressive.

Re: Rise of the Apes

Interesting. I know Weta is doing some work with this so I might go see it for that reason alone.
