Unfortunately that attitude is what got us AVP and AVPR.
The filmmakers got the notion, the fans want to see Aliens and Predators fighting and poured the effort into the creatures. Unfortunately, they got so caught up in that, they forgot, oh yeah, we have a 90 minute movie and because neither creature speaks, you can only really give 1/3 the screen time to the creatures and the rest has to be humans, and maybe we should flesh those out a bit so people won't get bored or even turned off by 2/3 of the movie.
I think Transformers 1 had a good blend of interesting human story and crazy creature (robots in that case) action, but I think TF2 even did the same as AVPs, fans reacted wanting more robot action, which they did a great job on, but the human story was lacking compared to the first.
You need a balance of interest in the creature(s) and the human(s) for these sorts of films to really work.
