Because robocop is a household name.
Its guarantees at least the same number ´s of sold dvd's and blu in theatre.
Its safe.
Thats the only reasons for remakes.
The studio feel safer than with original material.

Tought about it again today and it was a pretty balsy movie with the political and Murphy aspect.
I found it even sometimes more cruel that the original because its closer to our reality.
I even tought man no way hes gonna win, he s ****ed especially when you they show you that he needs more than babyfood to keep functioning. The original is over the top, cartoony sometimes with the uber violence, the crazy humor wich is awesome.
Here it feels kinda more real.
Really sad about the investigation part, action (wich was well directed) and production design wich was uninspired (almost human has a better look for exemple)
Jackson was fun, his caracter looked straight out from Fox network lol
When he loses his **** its priceless and scary.
Oh and damn the music was really ****ty, the trololol rock was crazy but i feel it was a **** you toward some audience, the fanboys or haterz maybe. Padhila is too smart to just drop it unintentionnaly.
Same for the opening on the mgm wich humiliate them kind a bit.
Its a weird movie because it has the heart of subversive film, hidden in a uninspired generic action flick.
I still have respect for Padhila coz i can clearly see what he wanted to do and when the studio stepped in saying no no.

If you are curious and want to see the movie in the right mode i urge you to watch ÉLITE SQUAD before, you Will see what type of cinéma Padhila does, his thèmes and some great handheld shootouts (very much like those from HEAT).
You Will see even more clearly when in its Padhila s robocop and when its studio execs robocop.

I haven't seen it yet, I'm stuck in a blizzard at the moment.

I posted that just so I could get some lolcat gifs out of it. :lol

Great success! :yess:

Sheesh, the things i'll say and do just for funny forum cats. :lol

Saw the remake last night side by side with the original as a special double feature.

It was sort of hard not comparing them having seen the original just minutes before it (and loving it ever since I was a kid), but I did enjoy the reboot quite a bit. I had fun. I actually really dug the story . . . to a point. Some scenes were absolutely fantastic and thought provoking, other times it was just sort of boring and bland. It was like the film was at odds with itself with what it wanted to be. I sensed a few studio notes throughout. There's still moments that shine through, especially in the middle. That mirror sequence is unsettling and I thought Kinneman sold quite well. There also seemed to be a lot of genuine excitement and hollering with the audience. Jackson was over the top, but funny. They ate up 1987 lines and the armor at the end.

Overall, it was fine. It's not better than the original but it certainly isn't a piece of **** either. A lot of the things that we were all criticizing (the armor, making fun of the original, he doesn't move like a robot etc.) isn't even evident in the final picture. It's too bad it got such a bad wrap before the release. Anyway, I was pleased. I'd even go as far as saying it's probably the second best "Robocop" thing out there with the sequels and TV series and all that. It's hardly on Total Recall, Carrie, Elm Street, remake levels. A money grub? Sure, maybe, but I still got a kick out of it. So yeah, not blown away but it's still good.

With that said, I'm in total Robocop mode now. I'm sort of pissed that the Hot Toys figures got pushed back to August. I want that figure now and can't wait to see the Weller sculpt on the upcoming Murphy version.

Thanks for the review DiFabio. I am have been wanting to see this one. Without spoiling if you can, is the twist that he is aware of being Alex Murphy really explored well?

Two of the best goddamn, absolute badass action films I have ever had the pleasure of watching--Elite Squad 1 and 2. Thanks olbert for mentioning them!

There is no twist, he is fully aware that he is Alex Murphy from the moment he is revived after his accident. When he sees the full extent of the damage to his body and the true cost of being given a "second chance" at life (ie. the fact that there is nothing left of his former self except a brain, head, lungs, and hand), he asks the doctor to kill him immediately because it's a life he does not want to live.
