Regarding the dubs, Bane, here's what I'd like to say about the whole thing in general which so often comes up with DBZ (and anyone please ignore this whole post if dub-talk bores you):

I personally have zero interest in the japanese dub. Now I've thought about why this is the case, because I'm usually fond of Japanese culture. It's not a matter of what's better, or some moral high ground of original creative vision and it's not some competition to me either, it's the simple fact that japanese (people) is just really really different from English (people). Japanese people sound different, the style and intonation is very different, and that's just a fact. The Dub is just an audible component of two very different cultures and people. One culture of which I share, and the other I don't, or well exceedingly less to the point I'd call one native to me and the other foreign. Neither is worse or better (that'd actually be a weird shade of racism to even say one is better than the other). It's just that one feels like specifically MY culture, and the other doesn't.

DBZ has just become an odd foster child of the west for me because of both the dub and the score, which made me experience it as largely native and I know that might be really annoying or even blatantly wrong to fans of the show in it's japanese glory, maybe one could argue it is wrong, but that won't change things now. It's a historical course of events. I'll never watch Pokemon in Japanese either (I actually had to endure that in Dutch, horribly enough). I LOVE anime in it's japanese glory, but that's when I actually feel like watching anime, when I feel like taking in the rich and great feel of japanese cultural export, which is a specific mood I have to be in (it's not my baseline mood, I can't help being a white guy from west Europe). Believe it or not, DBZ doesn't fall in that mood-category for me and I actually don't experience it much as anime tbh. Because of history, I don't associate DBZ with 100% japanese culture, there's a percentage of 'westerness' that became inherent to what DBZ is for me. If I'd be ignorant of DBZ's origins, didn't know there was a japanese dub, and somebody told me it was a western show based on the anime style and inspired by Japanese culture, that ignorant version of me would believe it.

So, with respect, trying to convince me of japanese dubs is time wasted, not because I think they're bad or because I'm a xenophobe, at all, but because I specifically want the cultural aspect that I can directly personally relate with present in this show. I understand you made a general remark Bane, not saying you posted it for me, but I just took the occasion to speak my mind, assuming I can just refrain from commenting on it in the future. Probably like you, this type of thing can just intrigue me and I get an urge to fully understand what it is.

So if anybody feels the same way, I hope I articulated it decently. If not, well then as the avatar I sport has put it many times "I should go".

Have you watched Kai in Japanese? If so, would you recommend it? I've heard it wasn't as good as the original because the actors are getting old, but I've only just seen the movies, so I have no comparison. It actually sold me on Broly, who I hated and thought he represented every bad stereotype of DBZ. While I still think the origin is awful, I kind of like him now. Now I can finally say I like every Dragonball character. Oh and I also watched some of Gt in Japan, and I actually liked Pan in that version.

The kai Verison I only watched in dub I was curious about the dub actors after all those yrs.loved they added the japan soundtrack it felt right I watched lots of anime and dbz changed everything to dialogue and the soundtrack which no one else did and I hated the producers for it .

Thanks. I'm going to have to check it out. I never watched subs on my DVDs only if I was switching to commentary tracks, I may have checked them out for fun. I learned Spanish in school, so it was fun to see how much I could follow along. It wouldn't last long, because I wanted to watch it in English. Although I didn't find it too funny in spanish, watching the Simpsons helped a lot in my spanish courses!

Actually, there's a funny counterexample to my stance on DBZ: I'm really inclined to go back and watch the Super Sentai MMPR was based on. Anybody here happen to see that? I saw the Red-Green ranger duel between Geki and Burai (I believe?) and loved it.

I personally havent watched alot of it (cant stand subtitles lol), but from what ive seen sentai is grittier and more graphic, possibly because it isnt oriented at kids like power rangers is. One example is the green ranger losing his powers; in sentai he is actually being killed by the candle, not just having his powers taken away.

Power rangers could have been so different if they wouldnt have adapted it for kids as much. Still love the show though.

most wanted is Kid Buu

This is true, he counts as another figure.

I agree, because what counts as 'another figure for character X' is whether it takes in a slot that could've otherwise been some other character. That's the case with sdcc exclusive (granted, we EXPECT that's the case, assuming they'll continue doing them).

And yeah BD, I've grown to dislike subs too. I grew up with them. MMPR and a lot of cartoons were my first english education.:D (Bless you 90s youth.) But now that my english has progressed to nearly second native lingo, I don't need subs for english at all (hell I had little trouble understanding Bane from TDKR) and the realisation dawned on me that I can't watch the screen AND read subs at the same time.:thwak Now if I go back to something with subs I can't stand it. Even if it's english subs underneath english audio, I keep reading the stupid lines and miss half of what's on screen. Annoys the crap outta me. Really ruined my anime-watching streak too as well as watching non-english films.:(

Yes! Enigma TNG finally uploaded my favorite mix of his. This track is so bloody epic!

SDCC Goku is the fourth

Sdcc is just a repaint it's not a different figure . It's still just ssj goku it just has slightly more brown/gold on hair and darker clothes . For sdcc it's been just a repaint so far for the manga colors to anime. Just like gohan got darker clothes .

So we have 1.ssj goku 2.ssj3 goku 3.normal black hair goku.

That's how I see it. Until they set a precedent of a different character or different look for the character in the anime/ manga for an SDCC exclusive, I just see it as a repaint.

It's like how they had a Arkham Asylum Battle Damaged Batman SDCC exclusive in 2010 for the fans, and then in January 2011, they came out with the regular Batman. Now at last year's comic con they had an exclusive new character, Hugo Strange, so now they set a precedent for that line.

With the emphasis on 'took a slot'...

But... take this year for example. Goku could get an anime repaint, a god repaint, or krillin could get a repaint. Regardless of whether you think any of those are realistic, they'd be three different releases relative to each other. If one gets it, that's a slot less for the others. That makes me view it as a valid different release. It goes to the cost of a version of a figure we then won't be getting.

That makes it a valid 'new release' slot imo.

I think if they changed the look like a SSJG Goku would be what does it, or a different look like Namek saga outfit, that would set the precedent, but otherwise I don't see it taking up a slot, more of a bonus. Although, it doesn't make sense why an anime release would be the "bonus". A very very expensive bonus! It's not helpful to them, when, in my opinion, their market is mostly made up of fans of the anime. I don't even know if they planned to have any exclusives after Goku, more of it being a situation of Goku is the most popular character, lets get more people excited about the line, by showing him in a more familiar look. They haven't even said they will continuously make SDCC exclusives. I think some people are just feeling entitled to it.

It's kind of like giving a hungry stranger a tuna sandwich, and they get upset why you didn't give the a chicken sandwich.
