I didn't think color mattered so I figured you would be using newspaper. Whatever paper you use make sure it's wet but not soggy. If the paper is too dry the mache won't bond or adhere. You'll do fine.

soak soft and coat well and get a more ashy, dried up look.

Jessica I don't think you'll have to cut the mane of your furry friend. Just tuck it under his vest and pull out whatever you feel is needed. I think you can layer it pretty nice for poses, but I'll let you be the judge. Maybe try this first before cutting.
