I can't seem to get the large circular top plate (the top of the lower body) to separate from the lower body,

Put your fingers in the center hole where you can see the battery, grab the top plate and pull it up. It will just pop off. Now you have all the access you'll ever need, it's like a small hottub. ;)

It was vonhahn's video that pointed out the three posts inside that you pull up on. Until I did that, it just wasn't going to happen. Man, this was a total pain. Even when I got the lid off, even just sliding the battery out was really difficult! Someone mentioned a nail clipper handle and that was the trick.

Glad it worked out for you

You guys are too funny. :) It doesn't matter where you pull up on that top panel, it will come off easily if the pressure is even. It's mentioned in the micro-sized instructions included in the box.

Saw that, but mine didn't.:dunno

Going back and forth on whether I am going to attempt a dual detolf mod.

Can you fit the Probe Droid in a detolf without modding the shelf height?

Waited too long to order this from BBTS. It sold out there now too. Snooze ya lose I guess. I might still pick it up at some point though.

Yes if you mod the rod height to 10" or use an acrylic rod that length.

IMO, spent a bit more and get either Besta, Stuva or Pax. For the first two you can use system doors or made your own and for Pax you must make your own. Check the Besta and Display advice threads for more details, pictures and ideas.

Ive considered that but dont really like that look, and since it will be in quite a small room I prefer the detolf or some other glass cabinet so that you can see the contents from all sides.

We have a store here called Aldi who sell a detolf knockoff with one key difference, adjustable shelf height perfect for 1/6 or 1/4 or probebots :)

You might consider the Nornas

There are a few ways to put two Detolf cabinets together to make a new double-wide cabinet, but to do it right (to do it the cleanest and most finished way) is quite a bit of work. IMO, it means brand new top and bottom panels and new shelves (leaving out the metal rails in the middle) - it's also best to join the two back glass sheets together to help stabilize the whole thing.

Then of course there's just singular Detolfs placed next to each other with no mods. That's the easiest of all. I'd still raise them up at least 20" though.

A probe droid will fit anywhere a 1/6 human figure will if you shorten the support rod and don't extend the antennas (very much).

I've looked at the Nornas myself and don't like the finish or the particular plastic fittings they use; matter of taste I guess but it seems a little rough to me.

Nornas ... seems a little rough to me.

It's Pine, unfinished at that, so yeah, rustic to say the least. It'll clean up with a little work, some stain or paint.

Unfortunately, the choices outside of IKEA ready-made are hacking multiple products, custom building from scratch or third party - this last option generally starts at over US$700 and goes up well past a few thousand for something the size of a Pax.
