Got Mine yesterday , got to say , im in the opinion that the paint ops looks a little lazy to me for the price point . Like with the clones , the weathering seems to be printed on like a skin of some sort . The parts that bother me most is the dome. The silver is dull and doesn't look metallic at all and I have plastic flashing on some parts . The dome flaps are a pain and very flimsy . The blue is meant to be metallic blue but instead they chose dull dark blue and that's really fecking annoying me. For this to be a perfect R2 , it needs to be stripped down and repainted completely . I allways know that Sideshows paint apps are not even at the the same level as Hot Toys, but sometimes when they paint silver things they need to think their paint brand . The silver paint appears lumpy and cheap . The lightsabre they gave us some parts look a little melted in spots like the plastic wasn't even dry when they assembled it . Overall R2 is an OK figure but I regret buying it sort of . Especially when I had a choice of this or pay a bit extra and get a hot toys figure. Also the flaps are loose and its becoming beyond annoying . Like general grievous this figure feels cheap and nasty and is not worth the asking price. I recommend not paying anything more than 150.00 for it even then you will be a little disappointed. Sorry :-(

With price points these days this is the main reason I passed on R2. (do I spend $150 on this or save those funds for a HOT TOY. I decided to save the funds). Sorry that you are unhappy with your purchase.

Good luck finding a Hot Toy in this price range. Oh, and one that also doesn't have its fair share of flaws, because they all do.

Incoming pics with multiple kinds of light:

Some shots of the the figure before I finished the legs and undercarriage.

Some closeups of the weathered underbody.

All done here.

Here a a few snaps I was able to take on my way out the door this morning in some more natural light.

Hey Marker2037,
Nice weathering! Now there's the R2 we all know and love!

Some great looking pics and weathering there!

So has anybody figured out a way to lift R2 up on some larger wheels yet? I was thinking maybe of creating some separate wheel "coverings" that would simply fit over the existing ones (since I don't need him to actually be able to roll around). Because otherwise if you try to install some permanent larger wheels, you'd have the problem of the middle wheel still being visible when that leg is retracted...

Just sit him on a few pieces of EVA foam (aka "fun foam") - you can get the stuff that's self-adhesive on one side and it removes easily enough when you don't need it.

Lol, well preferably I'd like to have something that still looked like actual wheels. Instead of just some pieces of foam. :p

And I wouldn't think it'd be necessary to hack into the existing figure either, since you wouldn't really see the underside of the feet anyway.

Nice work on the weathering! If it had looked like yours and Kamandi's out of the box, I might not have passed.

And how I plan to display him mostly, for now (Leia came out cool looking in the photos):

Is that now it came out, you haven't photoshopped this or anything? It looks great.

People seem to criticise this figure but it always looks good in photos. I've ordered one so i'll be interested to see how it looks in hand.

Looks good Marker. The one thing that doesn't show in my photos is I painted black the flat area around the retractable leg. Even though I never fully extend that leg it still was clearly white in there, looked wrong. Strange to say but Hasbro has always got this party right

? Unless you're planning to display R2 on his back with his feet pointing out toward you, there won't be any way to tell whether something under him is a wheel or a piece of foam.

Replacing the wheels or surrounding them with something else would require you open the holes in the feet and may interfere with bosses or other support/structure/assembly points on the inside which you can't see at the moment.

There's actually some distance between the vent bevels and the back surface, so it's tricky to paint. It can be done by painting the back surface with black oil paint and cleaning the vents off right away with turpenoid.

OK I know R2 is supposed to be weathered and a little beaten. But can someone tell me if that is what I am seeing. Or did I get an extremely bad one.

And I will say I am also not impressed with the packaging. Most of my parts were scattered all around inside the box.

Looks like the plastic is being pulled inwards

So I opened a defective ticket with Sideshow about my R2. This is their reply:

We have compared your R2-D2 to our display here as well as our product pictures on our website. Your figure appears completely normal. The paint is intentionally produced to look “weathered”. I have attached a picture with a few areas circled to show you that your paint coincides with our display.

As this is the case, we will be unable to provide you with a replacement since any replacement we would have would look exactly the same.

We do not want you to have a product that you are not happy with so if you are not satisfied with your order, you may return it to us for a product price refund.

So this is the way it is supposed to look huh??

The paint looks normal - you asked before and got the same reply.

Did you mention to them the few specific issues? The dents and the chipped/rough spots around the ring? Because if you just sent them the images, I'm not surprise they didn't know what you were talking about, they go through a ton of emails a day I'm sure.
