Really let down with this Godzilla Maquette, I am a photo retoucher (that is my job) and I am here to share with you all what their "guy" did with the prototype images launched last year. Here is the prototype image, and the final product photo that has been released. I also added more contrast to the final product photo, and BAM, it looks closer to what the prototype shot looked like with darker paint tones. Now the choice has to be made, cancel and move my NRD to something else, or go with it and have it repainted. :slap

I don't think the tail seam is that bad, I don't think I'd have even noticed if someone hadn't put a spotlight on it because this is the first time I am. Comparing the proto pics to the SDCC images and the final piece, the final piece seems about right to how it looked on display at the show, originally it seemed like it was coming off washed out at the Con and the proto shots revealed the true paint work but clearly there's photo enhancement, which is silly because there are aspects of the paint which looked worse because of it, they should have just stood behind the quality of the piece, it's one thing to use flattering lighting to bring out the best in work, I do it all the time, but adjusting the levels where the piece is not faithfully represented is just a poor decision.

It is possible the proto doesn't have a seem, but it does look blurry around that area. Paint is very bland. Box is great.

I planned on taking awesome photos of this piece when I had it in hand, good lighting, enhancements. However I have emailed Sideshow with all of my concerns as well as others. A few people have called and emailed them and have been told by SS that the assembly video was indeed a poor misconception of it's weight and paint. They said it is indeed a very heavy piece all together, around 72lbs. They have also said that the final product does look closer to the SDCC statue than the one in the assembly video.

I'm glad Sideshow could use the more creative marketing art for their packaging and not the bland, repetitive art so many other toys and products had to use, a giant box with that orange would have looked like the JAKKS Godzilla.

So other than a dude holding "72 lbs" (minus the base) in one hand, moving it, how was a poor misconception of weight conveyed?

I mean unless the video used something else, not the actual statue, a piggy bank version maybe, I can not see how we are supposed to understand it is heavy.

I have an awkward enough time trying to just the body piece of Sauron in one hand.

I can hold the Lobo pf body in one hand and that statue has been getting rave reviews. Paint on this is what needs to be seen in hand.

Whoever you talked to is full of crap. They went straight to the web page and pulled the dimensional weight for shipping. The actual product weight is 35 pounds according to Sideshow's listing but I don't even know if that is accurate. I would be surprised if it's that heavy.

I can't imagine it's 71lbs. Who would even want it to be that heavy??? That's just stupid. As a collector you'd have very limited places you could display something like that without it busting/bending shelves due to it being so heavy.

Any 1/4 statue greater than 40~45 lbs imo is too heavy and unnecessary.

Not to mention people would likely end up with more breakages due to dropping it when handling it.

Wow, that guy in the video is strong. 72 pound lift like it was a feather. Amazing.

I had this on pre-order at one point but moved my deposit to something else. It's looking more and more like I made the right decision. Despite the 72 lbs. claim, the statue in the assembly video appears light as a feather and the paint is dull and monochromatic (no subtle shading, etc.). The tail seam doesn't help the overall look either. This might be an acceptable maquette for some collectors at about $400-$450. At $800, I'm not seeing the quality, detail, size to justify that kind of investment. It's possible other in-hand photos may change some minds, but I think it is doubtful at this point.

It's difficult for me to argue that.
I also think you made the right decision. Time will tell.

As nice as the box art is, I never display boxes. I would rather have those resources put towards the maquette itself, if given a choice.
