Once upon a time, there was a little 1/6th expo called 1/6Xpo. SilentSurfer (that's me) met a fellow fan and customer of his named Darth Magnus. Magnus was wearing one of the coolest t-shirts Surfer had ever seen and discovered the world of Fright Rags.

F13-Part-3.jpg

Becoming and instant fan of Fright Rags, Surfer went on a two year search for this shirt, but because it was an anniversary limited edition, it never showed up on eBay, and never resurrected from Fright Rags shirt graveyard.

Surfer was sad. :monkey2 and mad :banghead and homicidal :cut

Then came along FAMcon. Surfer and Magnus met up for the second time after two years of cyber friendship (no, not that kind of cyber friendship :love, just this kind :1-1:). Surfer told Magnus that he had been searching for that one shirt ever since he first saw Magnus wearing it, but no luck. Magnus, being the kind of guy to give you the shirt off his own back, gave Surfer the shirt off his own back--after washing it of course (it smells pretty).

Now Surfer bees happiness. Thanks, Magnus!

This is just the sweetest story.

My Magnus Shirt Short Story-
Magnus was kind enough to buy me a shirt from last years 1/6 Expo. Says, "They're not dolls, they're action figures" on it. Magnus is a genuine nice man. We're lucky to have him around. :1-1:

Yeah... That story would've been great except.... That shirt was supposed to go to me!!!! Just kidding! I know this story and it's just another cool story in Mike's long list of cool deeds! He is a great guy and I wouldn't have housed him in my own house during Famcon otherwise if it weren't the case! Anyways, love that pic Nathan! Do I even dare to put on my 3D glasses for that image? :lol

Also, can't wait to see that Banner/ Hulk too!

Erick Sosa shared this on Facebook, and I thought it hit the nail on the head. I had a very close "friend" who was like the other me. We enjoyed the same things, had the same ideas, and finished each other's sentences. For a time he was my best friend.

The one thing that separated me from this "friend" who had as many good ideas and as much talent as I (but never did anything with it) is that one big, bold sentence toward the bottom.

"DO A LOT OF WORK"

That made all the difference. My "friend"... he moved on to try his luck at some other job because he was simply afraid to fail, incapable of seeing past criticism. Though he may end up making a fair living if he ever gets a job, I know it won't be what he dreamed of doing. He didn't want it badly enough to fail sometimes.

Amen Brother.....that was basically me my first 2 years out of college....doing anything to get into the field....grunt work, PA work, 3am call times, 18 hour days, anything to get my foot into door...I look back and see the progress I made and I can't believe I didn't just give up in year 3...I'm still not where I want to be, but putting in the work is getting me closer...I hope :)

Truer words have never been spoken...Great design too!

:goodpost: So true! I've met so many great creative people that just don't have the discipline to meet deadlines or take constructive criticism because their egos are too big, so they end up dead in the water. A person should always learn from their mistakes and grow from them. It's not just talent alone that gets one where he is, but a combination of talent and determination.

Nathan, does the air compressor make a difference in how good the paint comes out of the air brush? I'm trying to decide to get a cheap one or splurge.

Very inspirational stuff Nathan, love it.

Those Breaking Bad sculpts are killer :clap

Your wrestlers are in my top 4 upcoming projects, tbay. The wait is almost over. Those will be new and fun for me. Two of my all time faves coming up.

I'm still not where I want to be, but putting in the work is getting me closer...I hope :)

Me, too. Because of my ability to paint and the amount of painting I've done to get this good, a whole other door I didn't expect has opened up to me that is (in my opinion) even more creative and has nothing to do with painting.

Talent (I also call innate passion) you're born with. Skill you develop. Good reputation you build. And if you're good at all of those things, you get noticed.

It's not just talent alone that gets one where he is, but a combination of talent and determination.

Sometimes it does take years and years, but one day, you sit back and you're there.

Nathan, does the air compressor make a difference in how good the paint comes out of the air brush? I'm trying to decide to get a cheap one or splurge.

Since I airbrush so much all day, I splurged, and I couldn't be happier. I have an Iwata Power Jet with an air tank that stores the air, automatic shut off that turns it off when the pressure is full. No constant noise (it's not that loud anyway), and the air coming through my airbrush is super dry which is important. The moisture from the compressed air falls to the bottom of the tank before the air goes though the moisture trap and out to my hose. I NEVER have to worry about droplets of air spraying out unexpectedly and soaking my paint job with a wet mess. I highly recomment it.

Cheap compressors will also get very hot after 30 minutes or more, and even with a moisture trap can send compressed water through your airbrush. The frustration alone makes it worth spending more.

Awesome, still can't believe you were willing take these wrestling projects on for me!

What new door opened up for you if you don't mind me asking?

I've always wanted to work in the "industry" (show biz) on some level. With my love of iconic characters and the stories they inhabit, it's seems like a logical place to focus my energy, right? Of course I thought I wanted to be an actor at one point (and would if it ever happened), but as I started thinking hard about who I most admired in Hollywood, it wasn't Swarzenegger or Ford, but guys like Cameron, Spielberg, and Lucas. They didn't just play a part, or direct. They actually created something that people like me fell in love with.

I'm far from being one of them, but opportunity has knocked, and I'm knocking myself out trying to answer it. And it's happening because I can paint figures. Not an end in itself, though I enjoy it, but possibly a means to a greater end, if I prove to have as much talent as a writer as I do a painter.

My biggest hope is that it will come full circle and one day I'll see custom figures of characters I've given the world.

It's still a dream for now, but I'm starting to wake up without that disappointed feeling that "it was ONLY a dream".
