Re: Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Then they've already failed spectacularly. I'm predicting that this will be every bit as eye-rolling as River Phoenix' romp on the circus train at the beginning of Last Crusade.

Yeah, now that kind of painfully contrived stuff I DO fear as well.

Here's how Han met Chewie!

Here's how he got his vest!

Here's how he got that scar!

See him win the Millennium Falcon from Lando!

Watch him win the Kessel Run in less than 12 Parsecs!

Find out why Boba Fett doesn't like him!!

... all as played by some Teen Beat dork. Yay.

I can't imagine they would do something that silly and lightweight. Nothing in TFA or in the Rogue One trailer was even remotely close to the goofy tone of LC!

The thing I'm looking forward to seeing is how Han got his scar, saved Chewie, won the Sabacc game against Lando, got the Falcon, and started wearing a vest all in the same morning.

Edit: G-dammit! Irish beat me to the joke!

Ugh, I could totally see them showcasing some stupid animosity between Han and Fett. :slap You know, like in Monsters University where Mike Wazowski and Randall were on good terms and then Mike humiliated him at the competition and NOW WE KNOW dun dun dun. I liked the "big universe" aspect of ESB where Fett was just another badass for hire and not already linked to the heroes through a dozen other events.

All in the same morning! Oh man, what were they thinking in TLC. :rotfl

The thing that easily allows me to not get worked up is that since Ford is done playing the character this new guy will never be truly linked to him the way Phoenix was in Last Crusade. Putting Phoenix and Ford in the same movie really kind of sealed that deal (unless you dismiss Crusade completely.) And I actually wondered if in TFA Ford would make some cheeky reference to something silly like Battle Droids or Greedo shooting as a way of validating past mistakes but nope, it never came up so it makes it that much easier to ignore those things. Likewise I'll definitely check this new "Han Solo" movie out for curiosity's sake but I imagine I'll chuckle at a couple things, cringe at a lot of things, and then ignore it forever more.

i like that scene. :)
As did I. I'm not the biggest fan of Last Crusade, but you would think it was an Uwe Boll movie the way people run it down on the boards nowadays.

I'm gonna (apparently) go against the grain a bit here and try not to develop any strong pre-conceived ideas about whether or not this movie will work. We only have a sample size of one with Force Awakens, but we know that Disney can make a fun, nostalgic action/adventure romp for Star Wars fans. I don't personally see a big difference between very derivative sequel and very derivative prequel. Even if they do feel like they have to explain all the stuff Irish points out, the question for me is simply about how it's done. If it feels forced and cheap, and if it doesn't work for the purpose of the overall story, then of course it will suck. But so far Disney, with both the Marvel films, Force Awakens, and its animated output for the most part, has proven itself worthy of the benefit of the doubt.

If I thought that the Han Solo character was totally sacred and untouchable, I wouldn't have been happy to see a newbie like Abrams shaking the cobwebs off of him after 30+ years. But that was good. My preference would be for more fully original movies that didn't have to toss in throwback after throwback. But the economics preclude that happening, so the best we can hope for now is Episode 4 2.0, Episode 5 2.0, etc., and prequels like this.

You'd also think it was a Uwe Boll move to put a Death Star-type weapon and a cantina in a Star Wars film with the way people whine about it here. :lol

;)

Hey, I like Force Awakens! People have said that they thought Last Crusade was not just worse than the prior two films, but a terrible film. I didn't know this was a thing until recently, but was surprised by it.

Oh, well I do think the train sequence in TLC was idiotic but by the same time Phoenix was just so surprisingly good as a young Indy that I don't mind it too much. The first half of TLC is pretty hard to sit through overall but it really picks up when Henry Sr appears and keeps it up all the way to the very end. So it's hard to get into but it ends on such a high note that it always ends up being a fun watch.

Re: Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Maybe Disney just decided to cast the guy with the most complicated name to discourage the millennial trend of actor/character name mashups. If so I support their choice wholeheartedly.

Dont forget "How Han became a school drop out", How Han ran away from home, How Han stole his first roll of lifesavers, How Han lost his virginity, and How Han smoked his first joint too LOL

:lol I knew it was coming, the only thing that was up in the air was which syllables you'd be joining together because there's just so darn many.

Re: Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I am going into this with the same mindset I would if it were a James Bond film. Just because I dislike Pierce Brosnan doesn't effect my love of the character.

Nothing wrong with that. I do think that it's easier to accept different actors playing the same part when it's a literary character adapted to the screen though and not a character born out of one specific person's look and performance.

Re: Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Meh. I have never read one single Bond Novel. For the character really was born out of Roger Moore's performance. It probably helped that I discovered Connery and Lazenby (both stronger Bond actors IMO) after that. So I dunno. :dunno

Moore is underrated..he's a good actor and his Bond fit the era(and tone) he was in. His films just took the lighter Connery touches and extended it....I think LALD his first was pretty darn good Bond

Re: Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Love the Moore Bonds...but I always considered him the Adam West of James Bond LOL
