These casting choices just make no sense, honestly - other than the possibility that they're drawing from a small pre-determined pool of actors that are on the 'books' already, as it likely goes in general with the film biz.

That's probably true. He's a good actor, though. And that's more important than cosmetic quibbles, IMO. Better if they didn't do the Solo movie at all, but. . .maybe it will be fun.

Gonna be a nostalgia-fest just like Force Awakens and Rogue One. I suspect that it will be made to appeal to that audience in the same way everything else Disney is doing is meant to.

I actually don't mind the nostalgia stuff as long as its done well and the movie is good (see: TFA). I'm more concerned about the notion of trying to buy some doofus as a younger version of the same exact character Ford played.
