Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)
Well, in (minor - I agree with you) defense/context of that kind of "enduring outrage machine" video - we have indeed had bad SW films before, but this time had a little twist: the unrelenting attack by the wider media and fansites (both with vested interests in placating and standing with Disney) on those who didn't like it.
Variously ID'ed in relentless, toxic articles as: older fans, white fans, male fans, pathetic neckbeard fans; and the reasons they didn't like it: they're internet trolls/haters with spam bots, they're alt-right, they aren't "real" fans, they just want the old and aren't open to new, they're intolerant/racist/misogynistic.
Frankly, it was infuriating watching media and fan sites tripping over themselves, pandering to Disney (so they could be first in line for the IW premiere,) to come up with horse**** about bots and RT conspiracies (all disproven with no follow-up of course,) garbage "evidence" that ESB was as fan divisive as TLJ (don't get me started on the Starlog "expose" that was used in dozens of articles), trumpeting standard mega-franchise BO performance as earth-shattering (we didn't hear so much about Minions making over a billion, or about AOTC's adjusted billion, right?) along with a relentless, toxic attack on fans who didn't like it.
It was such a pathetic testament to where film criticism and journalism is today - and the corporate shaping/exploitation/control of fandom.
And as a final spin, imagine if Ewan - who LOL'ed at much about the PT - suddenly was "gotten to" the way Hamill was (obvioulsy the stakes being much higher with the direct connection to the OT hero) and was suddenly gushing about how great AOTC was, and how he was all wrong to criticize.
This differentiated the situation a LOT from the backlash against the PT, and probably stuck in people's craws a whole lot more - hence the "yet ANOTHER anti-KK video" thing you mention.
My last sentence did sound like that didn't it. Sorry, that wasn't my intention, I hate that too.
Point very much taken on the merchandise aspect of all this. Although that's not a frustration I've seen expressed in these unrelenting youtube rant videos. My post is directed at the overdramatic tone of these videos and the fact that they're still pumping them out months later like as though we've never had a bad Star Wars film before.
