Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

It sickens me that Jon Kasdan has felt the need to justify his failure to write and understand Star Wars by attacking George Lucas for what he essentially calls stealing all ideas from other cultures myths and sci-fi movies. Aka “cultural appropriation.”

George thought very deeply for a very long time on these stories and developed them with core elements of character archetypes in mind with an overarching theme. He understood the significance of myths and heroes in all cultures and that’s why the original Star Wars movies were cross generational and cross cultural. They were loved around the world. These themes imbedded in his movies run deep throughout the human race. It’s why they have lasted for 40 years because he got it right. He even brought in child psychologists to look over certain aspects of the story and characters to make sure certain situations weren’t going to be harmful to children. That’s how much he cared about these stories and how they would be received. He spoke to us through his movies about the nobility and virtuousness of the human spirit and it’s proclivity for tyranny and destruction.

Kasdan’s ability to deny blame and point to someone else for his failure is beyond psychological projection. It’s not noble or virtuous at all.

is he doing that?
on twitter or something?

interesting so #boycottsolo actually worked here LOL!! maybe the rumors that KK is going to be forced out will actually happen this fall.

The Ankler said September. That is known as a pretty accurate insider-fed newsletter - in that backstabbing/scumbag, relishing-someone-else's-demise way that defines Hollywood's DNA.:lol

Once again- more internet crap from "official sources". I don't see her leaving at all

Bombshell. I apologize if someone beat me to it.

Should I dig up all those posts of members disparaging me for crediting the boycott and dismissing the "Star Wars fatigue" excuse for Solo's BO bomb?

Star Wars Han Solo FLOP and fan boycott: 'Kathleen Kennedy GONE by September'?

STAR WARS Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has been savaged by fans and faces a box office office disaster with Solo A Star Wars Story. A new Hollywood report says a "changing of the guard" is coming in September.

Although industry pundits and some sites support the studio head, there has been an extraordinary backlash against the Star Wars franchise and specifically Kennedy herself since the divisive Last Jedi hit cinemas. The remarkably poor performance of Solo is being attributed in part to a massive ongoing fan boycott of Star Wars movies.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I don't think any boycott movement had any substantial effect on the Solo flop.

The vast majority of Star Wars ticket sales don't come from hardcore fans, they come from casual fans and movie goers. People that know the Star Wars brand from way back in the OT and watched it just because it's Star Wars. These people know nothing about a boycott. I'm a Star Wars fan and I know nothing of a boycott.

I really think it just boils down to people simply not being interested in Solo in the first place.

Its the fans who drag their family and friends to see these films. Its the fans who go back for seconds and thirds. Its the fans who talk the movie up or down.

Not only was a Solo movie unnecessary, the end product was (dare I say it again) mediocre. Critical ratings in the 70s, audience ratings in the 60s.

Now as a SW fan I *was* curious to see Han’s back story, but not as a checklist of moments that had been referenced in the OT. That made for a limited, boring flick.

I know right. Mimba, Train heist, Beckett, Qi'ra, Crimson Dawn, Enfys Nest, Darth Maul... Enough with the OT callbacks. :gah:

;)

Why prime why.

Why do you open your door like that when you know the boogeyman Khev is lurking, waiting and when you least suspect it he strikes!

I think Prime is having L3 hallucinations while watching the OT lol

Again, this is great for fans because of the nostalgia factor (it's fan service really) but it does little for the casual viewer. All the casual viewer sees is a movie where they recast Harrison Ford with an unknown kid.

This is why I think there was very little interest for this film.

"The TLJ thread, it's still running. Stop it, please, for God's sake, please stop it. There's no more time! Please stop it. Stop it now. Turn it off! Stop it! Stop it! STOP IT...!"

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

From the article:

The opinions and criticisms are also powerfully unified. It is overwhelming felt by many fans that the Kennedy vision for Star Wars disrespects the original legacy of the franchise and knowingly betrays the fan base by directly destroying the promises that were made when George Lucas sold the rights to Disney.

During the sale announcement Kennedy said to Lucas on camera: “The main thing is to protect these characters and to make sure they continue to live in the way that you created them.”

Youtube reviewer Jeremy Jahs has wracked up half a million views with his analysis of the situation.

He says: "The old crew being killed off to make way for the new crew doesn’t sound like the merger we were told it was. It essentially sounds like a hostile take-over. Which is a how a lot of people are interpreting these movies."

I didn't need to do a research project for me to know that all this would happen. Watching TLJ was enough. I knew it immediately. The reason is elementary. Luke Skywalker IS Star Wars.

You can't trash who many see as the main hero of the franchise and not do critical damage to the brand. The unbearable stink of it surrounds everything SW.

The secondary reason:

He echoes the popular frustration that Disney has been too heavy handed forcing social issues into the franchise and the criticism that Rian Johnson tried (unsuccessfully and poorly) to inject Marvel humour into The Last Jedi.

Jahns explains why this is not an issue of conflicting political or social views among audiences but a fundamental betrayal of what made Star Wars so special, which was that it didn't ever feel like our world or our society – and it was never supposed to.

He says the behaviour of 'feminist' activist droid L3-37 in Solo or that ill-judged prank call between Poe and Hux in The Last Jedi are jarring references to our own modern concerns.

Jahns argues: “It’s from our galaxy, our solar system, old world. It’s too on the nose. It takes the escapism out of Star Wars.”

Amen.

Hehe, I *would* repost my extensive list of OT callbacks but I’m sure we all know what they are.

I will however mention one: Did they REALLY need to fire up the holochess table for the THIRD time in the saga? You’re on the Millennium Falcon, WE GET IT. Wookiees don’t like losing, WE GET IT.
