First there was the grammatical error in the TLJ opening crawl (Only General Leia Organa’s band of RESISTANCE fighters stand), now the Solo opening is bugging me.

It says it was a "LAWLESS" time. Sure, there were underworld crime gangs operating, but with the Empire asserting its authority I'd hardly call it lawless - more like martial law.

You are correct, but you're talking to a generation who says "impordant" instead of important and "sennence" instead of sentence, to point out just a couple.

Eh, there’s some room for error in that. How’s this sound? “The Beatles is great.”

Though they did mess up the crawl in TFA too. Made it sound like Luke was one of Leia’s many brothers the way they wrote it.

So now that one of Kennedy/Rian’s most vocal and harshest critic here otomofan bought his SHFA island TLJ Luke after spending months here posting how much Kennedy/Rian ruined SW and disgusted him with island Luke milking a space cow I need to know which TLJ figure you bought lol

But that’s the point, it’s the name of one specific band. It’s not multiple bands we’re talking about. Yet it’s treated as plural. Compare to “The Avengers is a great movie.” That works, right?

Usually it’s said that if you’re talking about specific members within a group, or band in this case, then you adjust the verb accordingly. The TLJ example is muddied since it is referring to the resistance fighters. Stands probably would have been better either way though since they’re standing in unity theoretically.

I think in this case, "stand" is referring to the individual members of the collective noun "band" so plural does work... Not sure though... could go either way. It's been several decades since I learned this in school. :rotfl

"Lawless time" is a phrase the predates Solo and typically refers to periods like the Wild West or 1930's era gangsters when substantial groups of individuals or full on organizations conducted criminal enterprises largely unchecked by the powers that be. It doesn't mean a literal absence of laws or law enforcement.

I’m sure they were going for that western vibe, it just jarred for me - especially when the very next thing we saw was Corellia under Imperial control!

On another note, the two most unnecessary parts of Solo for me were when they referenced Chewie’s age and nickname.

I mean, we worked it out for ourselves 40 years ago, why do we need to be spoon-fed now?

But it was a bad example because it's the plural of Beatle. So not really the same thing.

Bands are a funny example though because in most other cases, either will work. "AC/DC is" and "AC/DC are" both sound fine. I guess band names (that aren't plural) tend to get treated as collective nouns.

Yes, but again not the same thing because it's referring to the title. "Band of resistance fighters" should be singular.

But as I said, it's not that big a deal and most people wouldn't have noticed (only pedants like me!)

Let’s not forget you are still tied to the singular word movie. If you said “The Avengers are great movies” or “The Avengers movies are great” it signifies the plural conjugation of movie. You can still say The Avengers is my favorite movie of all time.

The word Beatles is a band which is also group of people. You could say “The Beatles are going to be in town” or The Beatles are celebrated as one of the most influential groups of all time. Denoting A singular band inside many groups at the same.

True it wasn't necessary but nothing after ROTJ has been necessary. No one ever needed to see how Anakin became Vader or what the Clone Wars looked like or how the Death Star plans were stolen or any of that. We also didn't need to see any further adventures of the OT heroes.

So it isn't about telling "necessary" stories per se it's all about just having a fun two hours at the movies. RO and Solo weren't necessary but they were very good and enhanced the overall Saga. The PT did the opposite. The nice thing about Solo stating that Chewie was 190 years old is that it cleverly tells you exactly where in the Saga this movie fits and that is exactly 10 years before ANH. Chewie's age isn't stated on screen in the OT but I'm sure you remember all those storybooks and trading cards that always called him out as Han's 200 year old co-pilot.

“They are the stories we need, but not the stories we deserve.”
-Batman
Or is it:
“They are the stories we deserve, but not the stories we need.”
-I am Batman

So if they aren’t going to do a trilogy of this Han, why have that ending with Qi’ra :lecture

Well they were planning on doing two more (Alden stated he was signed on for three films) but that was before this one failed at the box office.

At least this film won't feel incomplete like Terminator Salvation and Genisys did since apart from Qi'ra all of Han's main story beats were either resolved satisfyingly or tied directly into the OT. If Qi'ra doesn't appear in the Obi-Wan or Boba Fett film then they can always continue her story in comics or whatever.

It's a shame that we most likely won't get at least a sequel (let alone a trilogy) for "Solo". While not perfect, I did enjoy the film and would have liked to have seen where they go next, story-wise.

Yeah they really could have had a fun side series going with this cast in the tradition of Indiana Jones but possibly based off vintage EU novles. Han Solo at Stars' End, Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of ThonBoka, etc.
