So to hell with Dave who pays for the forum and those that make money off it should still get it for free?

He shouldnt be the only one to pay for it.
Many websites ask for donations to help upgrade or keep alive forums and that work like a charm.
THAT ill be glad to give money for.

Im all in for pro, customizers, those who make a lot of money out of this site to pay the right to sale but not for regular shmoes.

Olbertfrog, you have a ton of items in your for sale thread. You could easily absorb $30 spread over the sales of all those items. It would slightly raise your sell amount and you would shoulder the up front cost, but you are surely gonna make that back over a years time.

How would that hinder your sales?

Thats not at all the question for me.
I could as you say raise a bit my stuff to cover for it or simply take it out of my pocket but it just dont feel right to me, thats all.
It kills the community aspect of it.

I already have a few french website where im selling stuff but here i get to talk to guys from all around the globe and have some good surprises. I could up that on ebay and be over with it very quick.

That pro have to pay i understand, they are using dave's platform to win big but casual collectors are mostly here to fund their hobby.
To avoid evilbay or find rare stuff. Make regular shmoes pay will end up having less sellers and im talking as a potential buyer, i will have less options. Also how many thread have you seen with people in dificulties selling their stuff to pay for real life expenses, when yur wallet is good 30 is nothing, sometimes its a lot...

Im just not digging and im saying it, it but if its whats coming...
It will not stop me from coming here and enjoying the great company

Well, they should have a paid banner on the front page anyway. They are getting around having to pay for advertising by letting Dave shoulder the cost.

This is a captive, focused audience. If they want to drive visits to their site, they should be willing to buck up and give a few bucks to do so.

It's not even a monthly charge! Even if it were, $1 a day would be reasonable for a company. Hell, when I do shop there I spend at least twice that per visit! It only makes sense when buying parted out items to spend enough to justify the shipping.

There's no issue here. Dave, launch the new site.

I never mentioned there was any issue, I simply stated an incident that took place earlier.

I'm neither for, nor against this decision. DD definitely knows what he's doing, how it'll impact the board is yet to be seen. All we can do is speculate at this point.

If TA appreciates this site so much then dropping less than .09 cents a day , not the buck a day Lee mentioned to a site that supported them for years shouldn't be a problem. If they find this fee to be difficult the good riddance ! Even a buck a day for the advertisement a Pro gets from this site is probably worth it .

Its rather disturbing how many people view this as Dave's sole purpose is to make a profit . Maybe it is but I do not think so. I'm sure there is a cost to run this place not to mention the cost of stress and headaches to keep things running smoothly.

Long and short of it is $30.00/year is reasonable and it's not like Dave will be making a killing. I don't sell anything, don't need the PM space or extras but will probably still subscribe (though I'd welcome any ways the new boards have for customizing how and what we see). I get a lot of enjoyment out of coming here and will just consider it part of my entertainment budget to help out with maintenance. Looked at from a perspective of hrs of use vs dollars spent, it's a pittance, as said very well by hydrobud.

Regarding dealers - I'm not intending to change how they use the site now. However advertising will also be part of the new design and dealers will have the opportunity to get their display ads in front of the members.

(And part of the Premium Membership will be limiting the amount of ads you see.)

May I ask why all of these changes are coming? It seems like the forums had a pretty fluid system going, and I'm just wondering why the sudden change. To be honest, I worry more about the interface than about any subscription fee. Is this going to be a total overhaul of the forums, or more of an under-the-surface sort of upgrade? I need to know if I should be prepared to have my entire idea of SSF reinvented.

That's a great question though. Wondering about the loss of posts, pictures, having to "start over". I've gone through that with one message board. They upgraded to a new board and lost everything. People even had to re-register. There was a back up of the board made, but it wasn't compatible with the new message board, things just wouldn't convert or transfer over.

I don't get it. If there's gonna be advertisements, why wouldn't that be the factor that pays the bills? It has worked for some free publication magazines for years, and they're not hurting.
