They should have made this more a Vader movie than it seems to be. Having numerous villains that don't ever show up again on top of the heroes we also have never seen again seems like it might not be that dramatic. Be nice to see Captain Antilles but haven't heard any mention of him.

Personally all those things you loved are the reasons I'm loving the idea of this movie. There are way, way to many fanwank moments in these franchise films lately, with a lot of films refusing to make definitive statements on character's fates just incase they change their mind in a potential sequel. Its refreshing to see a film that will be largely self contained, without doing everything half-assed just for the sake of franchise building.

Yeah, but the result in this case is you basically know/suspect that everybody dies, or just doesn't have anything to do with the Rebellion or Empire afterward. So there's some anticlimax as well. It might have been smarter to do a movie not so connected to ANH. I'm still looking forward to it, though all the purported problems and reshoots with another director does give me some pause.

Yea, me too. The studio and creative team having a completely different vision (especially when the studio is thinking with their wallet) is never ever good for the finished product.

Honestly, I suspect the film that we see in theatres will be simply on the better side of average, with the eventual director's cut Blu-Ray largely considered the better version of the film. Much like the Star Wars prequels, the 4th Indiana Jones, and the more recent DC Cinematic Universe, the quality of this film will be hotly debated on this and many other forums for years.

Star Wars started with a bunch of heroes and villains that we never heard of.

It was PT thinking that started to make everything connect. I hate that.

If it's a "disappointment," my hope is for something like that Jeremy Renner Bourne movie, where it's still completely watchable, just missing whatever the first few films had.

No, exactly. It would be great, but they have tied it so closely to ANH. The whole prequel aspect of the PT was a bit anti-climactic to me as well--we knew the outcomes and unfortunately, watching it unfold was less than thrilling for a magnitude of reasons. I mean presumably lots of these characters do in fact live, they're just hired guns and so may live on in their own adventures from here one (worked into the comics, etc.)

As far as what they're going for with Rogue One, imagine the same exact type of movie (war movie, secret mission) that takes place 2-3 years after ROTJ. Empire is defeated in theory yet there are still remnants to content with, we don't know the heroes and villains (huge void here with Vader and Emperor gone) and Leia, Han, and Luke are not involved. Then we have something to work with since there's a 30-year gap before TFA, and so much has changed by that point that we shouldn't expect to assume the fates of any character involved. It's just the 5 weeks before ANH, or whatever it is, that has always seemed a touch problematic. None of it matters (the slew of new troopers, the beach setting, "I rebel...", or anything I mentioned) if the movie is good though.

I'm still looking forward to something completely removed from Skywalker-land.

I'm getting a little sick of Skywalkers and Obi-Wan spin-offs and Han Solo, the early years, etc.

And I hope all the heroes die in RO... so I don't have to worry about Jyn or whomever coming back as an old woman in TFA 2.

:lol You may get your wish. But I thought she was supposed to be Rey's mom. :monkey4

Yeah, I guess my thinking comes down to they should have made it even more removed. But, looking forward to it.

Rey's mom. :slap

See... this is PT thinking.

That picture above scares me. I see Disney doing something like that 5 years from now on their Disney channel for kiddies.

There's already been talk of an ABC show. Please no. I'd take an HBO show if there has to be one, but oversaturation seems imminent already.

:lecture

With canned laughter every two seconds no reason, just as with the Big Bang Theory.

And they'll all say, "Oh, Haaaan!" every time Force Ghost Han does something silly.

To be fair, the first six Star Wars films were the story of Anakin Skywalker. It was the rise and fall, and ultimate dying a heroes death after all was said and done. Luke and Obi-Wan and Han Solo were all certainly important to Star Wars, but it is the Skywalker story, thus why they're so heavily portrayed in the films.

Sort of why it pisses me off that Disney canned the EU. There was so much other depth to the world. And it still pisses me off to no end that they got rid of Kyle Katarn in Rogue One. Such horse****.

No, no, no... that's PT raised-and-bred misinformation. And it's far from fair. The focus of the OT is hardly Vader. That's a quaint view from hindsight when one watches the PT. But the PT does not change the narrative of the OT.

The PT twisted the OT into something it was not in regards to Vader. His redemption is a nice character arc finale in the OT. But to say the OT is a narrative about Anakin is really to not understand storytelling. Other than Vader's redemption, there is no real story growth that occurs for Vader.... until the last 15 minutes of the entire trilogy.

The OT is Luke's story. He saves his corrupted father. The light that the PT sheds on Anakin/Vader simply aids that moment in ROTJ when Vader kills the Emperor to save his son. Admittedly it plays much better knowing the PT than it did originally. Because originally there wasn't much drama to Vader's character. It's all heresay... and then he finally turns good after all.
