As Grievous has said if you take the helmet off the head mould has the white flight skull cap on it. Much faffing to even try to remove that and add hair, if possible at all.

On a side note... I've seen a X-Wing SSC pilot for reasonable amount. Head sculpt is poor as we know but how easy would it to be to replace with the HT Luke sculpt from the Stormtrooper disguise figure? Is it worth doing? How's the flight suit tailoring etc?

Ditto Davejames.

I just decided to get X-Wing Luke and keep helmet on like most others to avoid the whole headsculpt dilemma. Love it actually. Helmet looks great, and orange outfit really looks great on the shelf.

I even had the Snowspeeder version, but once I saw how he looked next to X-Wing Luke I thought what's the point. They look so similar. So sold for a good price.

I'll wait for a HT Snowspeeder version with superior headsculpt. But until then, X-Wing Luke is great !

I want to display mine without a helmet, so what's my best option then?

Dave is probably right that the best option is to wait for HT. Nobody has truly nailed Luke the way HT has nailed other characters like Leia and Tarkin. If I had to choose my fave Luke sculpt it's still the DX. I would use that over any other on the Snowspeeder figure without a helmet. I'm sure others disagree.

I actually like the ROTJ Hoth sculpt from HT and I know some people love the DX... But the tailoring and detailing on this SSC Snowspeeder version is so good I'm really not sure how much better HT can make this figure. Yes, people can talk about the body being tighter and better but I've never had an issue with the body on mine. Helmet detailing is superb, jacket weathering... everything just works on it for me. HT will probably make the unhelmeted sculpt better but I think I'll only ever have mine with the helmet on. HT will probably add the magnetic winch gun though... just to give even those of us with this figure something to need.

Helmet detailing is superb,

Both Sideshow pilot helmets could be vastly improved. The colors are wrong. The weathering and paint is quite poor. I own both.

That what Toyanxiety is for.

No, I agree with you. I have decided to use my DX07 head on him and put either the un-helmeted SS sculpt or a KO HT ANH sculpt on my Bespin Luke (he’s posed side-on, duelling with Vader, so I think I can get away with it!).

The unhelmeted head can be tweaked to make it at least usable. I actually think it has a solid Hamill likeness (possibly better than the Cruise/HT one) but its SSC paint apps are flat and without much realistic subtlety, as well as the sculpt being very slightly caricatured and low on detail. It's the same issues with the SSC Hoth Luke, but that one had the purplish/dark paint and weird glass eyes.

Another major problem with most recent SSC heads has also been that the hair sculpt is poor on detail and also very blandly (and often thickly) painted. The hair on this one a small notch better than figs like Luke Hoth and Luke X-Wing, but still nowhere near HT paint. However - as with the underlying face sculpts, I think the overall look of the hair presents better than the copper helmet of the HT Luke.

And the helmeted and unhelmeted sculpts on the Luke Snowspeeder are different sculpts. The helmeted one (slightly open mouth) is the better likeness to me. As someone mentioned, people did take the helmeted sculpt out of the helmet, put the hair on it, and then "hide" the unhelmeted sculpt inside the helmet.

I should take a new pic of this - I've made a Dagobah mud/log piece to partly cover the base like what the Hoth Han and Luke had with a snow piece. I still need to put that small rectangle of velcro on the neck collar strap. I still haven't had the courage to apply a gloss coat to the figure to suggest him being wet.

I see what you mean... the SSC is very dirty but I kind of like it that way... for some reason that bottom one just looks too clean even though it's the same as the first show but with more light on it.

It's never seemed that off to me but I suppose when directly comparing with the above shots there is a marked difference. Maybe I just like to convince myself I won't need a HT version.

Yeah, the Snowspeeder Luke helmet is better than the X-Wing version - more the "plum" color than the bland red they used for the Red Five Luke - and its also better weathered, but neither are all that correct in terms of size/placement of emblems and realism/accuracy of weathering. A somewhat lame effort to some degree, but very much in line with SSC's "kinda sorta right but not accurate" approach to accuracy.

All sorted. DX07 sculpt swapped in, as well as a real leather gun-belt by Gustavo Ponce:

One on his own:

No, it’s the original Sideshow body. The DX07 neck post fits onto the peg inside the Sideshow body, once you remove the original neck post. I just warmed up the DX07 neck in some boiling water before popping it on.

I then put the Sideshow neckpost and un-helmeted sculpt on my Bespin Luke, which you can see behind.
