Another good one IMO. Ortega was a bit annoying in this one, otherwise, a rather stellar episode.

A few points:
1. I love how they used the black hole to their advantage. Same with the brown dwarf. I also liked how they are using modern scientific ideas (like how an object falling into a black hole would look like).
2. Star Trek ships were always like fighting submarines (like the battle vs Khan). I like how this episode is a throwback to that.
3. I love how the crew is looking out for each other.
4. Pike is exhibiting good command here, taking ideas again from his crew and coming up with solutions.
5. I chuckled at the doctor and nurse Chapel almost intimidated by the thought of practicing medicine manually. I guess it is the same when doctors today would be afraid of doing medical procedures from the 50's.

Some downsides:
1. Ortega's quipping got boring.
2. Medbay is down, what happened to M'Benga's kid?
3. Spock going with La'An made the mind meld predictable.

I think this is now the best Trek since DS9.

Another solid episode. Looks like they've finally got a good awesome modern take on Star Trek.

Oh wow this was a pretty dark one...

I had an inkling about what was going to happen halfway but I did not expect it would turn out like that.

Kirk wouldn’t have gotten knocked out by that third guard, a flying drop kick would’ve won the day.

:lecture :lol
I like how we're back to a Star Trek that asks difficult questions. Bravo to that.

That said, apparently this episode was based off an unused script written by Gene for the TOS.
Indeed! I didn't know that about the script and TOS, very cool.

I think this episode is my least favorite so far for the season. It's not bad, it's just feels like it was cobbled together IMO.

I liked the Spock comedy episode - except for the silly part with Rebecca Romijn and the Security girl spacewalking on the Enterprise hull without spacesuits. I feel like that should not be a thing - especially not if it's for frivolous purposes.

I do think that was the point of it all. It was frivolous, a sheer safety violation, something someone of their rank should definitely not be doing. :lol The pure silliness of it all sold it for me.

To be fair they were under a force field when they walked on the hull of the Enterprise and that was the point of Enterprise Bingo; to break the rules. :lol

When I was in the Marines we broke rules all the time. :monkey3

As a non trekkie I don't usually watch any trek stuff (grew up casually watching the old series and TNG, mostly lol'd at the low production value, skipped most of the stuff between, watched some of the movies then tried discovery then went "meh" and stopped watching that show) but glancing through this thread it seems folk like this show. May give it a go. Does one need any prior trek knowledge to enjoy it or is it general audience friendly?

There are references to Pike's future fate which he witnessed in Discovery (and which we saw in the Original Series) but nothing you can't pick up as you go.

It's definitely my favourite of Nu Trek, captures the TOS spirit with modern production values. And Anson Mount is the most likeable captain since Scott Bakula.

(And yes, there's no shortage of eye candy, though I actually prefer Rebecca Romijn and Christina Chong to Jess Bush.)

Sounds like good tv. Writing good?? No gaping plot holes etc?
