At least we now know what J.J. meant when he said he wished he'd written Ep VIII himself: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...r-before-episode-viii/?utm_term=.68e3dea52944

Anyone who had read the article that you linked has always known what he meant . . . because it's explicitly made very clear. Here's word-for-word from the article (with bold font being my own for emphasis):

"He read it and said something he never, ever says,” Grunberg, who plays pilot Snap Wexley in the new film, tells The Post’s Comic Riffs. Grunberg said that Abrams called the Episode VIII script “so good” that he wished he had written it.

“He may have said something one time on ‘Lost,’ with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator],” continues Grunberg, whose credits on Abrams series include “Lost” and “Felicity,” “but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Abrams’s remark serves, too, as a ringing endorsement of the new script and its filmmaker. The writer-director now inheriting the Star Wars franchise, of course, is Rian Johnson . . .

I know that people want to make it seem that Abrams must be frustrated by what TLJ did, and that he must have wanted to get back in to "fix" things; but the fact that his own friend (Grunberg) made it clear that Abrams was really impressed by Johnson's script should be enough to dismiss that type of fan "logic." Part of me laughs at how people can take something and twist it to imply an opposite meaning. The other part just goes, "Wait . . . What!!???" I get that conjecture can be fun, especially if it helps support a certain narrative, but I prefer to just rely on the actual truth. Especially when it's spelled out clearly.

Then again, maybe I'm missing something. If so, please let me know what was said or implied to contradict the article above.

Or maybe the fact that in Hollywood no one ever says anything negative to the press ever. Its bad for business to burn your bridges regardless of what you think of a person's work. Look at what happened to Shia after he criticized Crystal Skull.

Honestly I don't think we will ever know what JJ thinks of TLJ.

You guys that like TLJ and defend it are just as bad as those that don't. So this article says JJ liked it so much he wished he wrote it. That's what the defenders choose to believe.

Meanwhile.....

JJ's close friend, and a person who has worked on projects with him, Simon Pegg has come out and stated and quoted in many articles that JJ was very unhappy with what Johnson did with Rey and her parentage in ep8. That it did not go at all in the direction he wanted the story to go in and even had an outline to possibly help the directors on ep8 & ep9.

So. Whose being truthful? :dunno

Save face with your bosses, or telling the truth to a friend who is also a Star Wars fan and seems he too was unhappy with the direction Johnson took with ep8. And doesn't need to worry about backlash from Disney.

Out of curiosity can you post a single link to a Simon Pegg interview where he actually states that "JJ was very unhappy with what Johnson did?" Or is that just conjecture that you're stating as fact?

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Look. This is Hollywood. These are the biggest two faced back stabbing people on the planet. What's good for their careers is more important than what they stand for or believe in. There were plenty of articles quoting Simon Pegg. A simple Google search will give you plenty. Many are opinions of the writers. Its context within his statement and how you interpret it.

I didnt say I believed either.

But I bet you JJ's upfront payday to fix ep9 is even bigger than his payday from ep7. He's not gonna give that up and ever tell anyone to the contrary that he didn't like what Johnson did in ep8 and altered his vision.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

When I google "simon pegg last jedi" it just shows a bunch of links that appear to all reiterate Pegg's claim that JJ had a different idea for Rey's lineage. I see no reason *not* to believe such a claim but that doesn't mean that JJ was unhappy or upset any more than say Ridley Scott was mad over Cameron changing the Alien life-cycle from egg-people to a giant queen (and Scott has gone on record many times saying that he likes ALIENS which I don't believe to be BS since he has openly criticized everything after.)

But you state that many articles say that JJ was "unhappy" which might indeed be his sentiment (for all I knew you were going to quickly post a link proving as much) but it is not published fact. At least as far as anyone can legitimately indicate.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

It would take JJ all of 5 minutes to give the fans in IX exactly what they were hoping to see in TLJ.

You know how easy it would be for JJ to change Rey’s parents, reveal Vader, explain Snoke and bring Luke back if he wanted too. :lol

Simon Pegg's comments were from a live podcast. He stated...

I know what J.J. kind of intended or at least was being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by the last one. There was some talk of a relevant lineage for her.

Again, I never said what I felt that meant. I never listened to the full podcast.

Some articles ran with it saying Simon Pegg was implying JJ wasn't happy with what Johnson did to his plans and the groundwork and outline he laid out for the next 2 installments in ep 8 & ep9. Others chose to read into it that JJ liked the changes Johnson made. You take what you believe. Defenders defend, while those who don't like it can just as easily spin it their way.

My point is it's all BS. You can't believe anything these people in Hollywood say or do. These guys have ego's. In no way is JJ gonna say "the Episode VIII script “so good” that he wished he had written it.". That's like telling his bosses, Johnson is better than me.

But isn't that exactly what you were doing when you posted this?

JJ's close friend, and a person who has worked on projects with him, Simon Pegg has come out and stated and quoted in many articles that JJ was very unhappy with what Johnson did with Rey and her parentage in ep8. That it did not go at all in the direction he wanted the story to go in and even had an outline to possibly help the directors on ep8 & ep9.

Then you quoted him correctly from the podcast; a quote that offered no suggestion that Abrams was "very unhappy with what Johnson did."

My point is it's all BS. You can't believe anything these people in Hollywood say or do. These guys have ego's. In no way is JJ gonna say "the Episode VIII script “so good” that he wished he had written it.". That's like telling his bosses, Johnson is better than me.

The quote about JJ feeling that Johnson's script was so good that he wished he'd written it had nothing to do with his bosses. It was something that Grunberg (also friends with JJ) was stating came from Abrams in a conversation that the two of them had. Abrams probably assumed (rightfully) that the two of them were having a private conversation, and that no one would ever know he even said that. And Grunberg revealed this conversation TWO YEARS BEFORE Johnson's movie was even released to theaters. It came during promotion for TFA. There would have been no reason to attribute false praise to a guy who's movie wasn't the big subject in December of 2015. That makes no sense!

I would believe Pegg. His depression gives him more reason to not give a **** about anything, and not like his character really has a huge role in the series; so what does he have to lose if he tells the "truth"?

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

And if it’s all 100% true will that all of a sudden validate the hate narrative?

Or.....OR is the more likely scenario that directors/writers/producers have been altering the work of others for nearly 80 years by the order of the studios!

Because that’s how studios work!

You guys/gals are talking as if Disney doesn’t have final say!

But go ahead keep staring at the single tree and ignore the SW forest that Disney owns. :lol

OMG the studio ordered a director/writer to alter the work of another director/writer IT CAN’T BE NOT IN HOLLYWOOD, HOW!

lulz

7 months in and the TLJ hate narrative is still easy to debunk.

At least JAWS had valid complaints on the movie. :lol

Bring crows back at least she/he put some effort into it lol
