Yep. Worst Lucasfilm decision in eons.

And their reasoning is silly, too. "We want to keep Darth Plagueis' backstory a secret so it doesn't become mundane."

But it's okay to blow the lid off the mythical Clone Wars, have Luke drink hot chocolate and lizards who create "bubbles" in The Force, turn IG-88 into the CPU of Death Star II and give Han and Leia frickin' Jedi twins????

Thanks for the input guys, I was considering the same sort of thing lately as in which SW novel to buy, so this thread makes handy reading.

The EU can be a scary place if you're not used to all the different series and timelines in the various novels.

Anyway Darth Bane was one of the books I was thinking about picking up and from what I've read here I'll get it.

I was also thinking about Allegiance the new book with the Stormtroopers on the cover

Anyone read it?

That sounded good because it was set during the original trilogy and had alot of recognisable characters from the movie.

The last book I read was Betrayal and not being a follower of the EU, I was completely confused and gave up on it.

Get it. That one and the books written by James Luceno (Cloak of Deception, Labyrinth of Evil, and Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader) are the best the EU has to offer, imho.

By the way, Darth Bane was written by Drew Karpyshyn, who was the lead writer on the first KOTOR game.

Yeah read Labyrinth of Evil last year when I was on the night shift and really enjoyed it, think I read Cloak Of Deception as well but it was a long time ago I think it was the one with Palpatine and Vallorum right?

I haven't read Dark Lord : Rise Of Darth Vader, but I'd be tempted to get that one as well as it's set just after episode three.

So Vader and Palps would be in it, right?

Don't get it unless you are a big Mara Jade fan. The book is 60% about her, 20% about the Stormtroopers, and 20% about the Big Three.

Really?

That sounds disappointing, I like Mara and all but I was more interested in the Stormtroopers and movie characters.

I think I'll probably end up getting Darth Bane and then Darklord Rise Of Darth Vader, thanks for the tip Pixeltwin and Irish:D

Also, the Epilogue of DARK LORD is absolutely essential reading, imho.

You want something that completely ties ROTS into ANH, that Epilogue is it!

Simply terrific.

Couldn't agree more IrishJedi

What!?!?! Oh my GOd, those mother****ing *****rds, why the hell would they do something like that. That was probably the most anticipated book I've had in a long time....
I know. It was a true kick in the gut when I heard that last week. I actually thought it was a dumb April Fool's joke. But nope, Sue Rostoni and her team at LFL killed it. :banghead

Maybe they're just getting tired of Luceno writing Prequel era novels that are better than the movies.

Sooooo True. Per the epilogue, it was a scene I was hoping would've been in ROTS but alas, it wasn't. :monkey2

I know. It answers 2 very critical Vader/ANH related questions still left unanswered in ROTS. :banghead

But at least Luceno picked up the dropped ball and hit nothing but net!

I think his percentages are a little off...it actually had a considerable about of "stormtrooper" story going on in it and without spoiling anything, the Jade & stormtrooper arcs in the story merge nicely.

"Allegiance" is actually the first SW TZ book I've read in awhile that moved at a brisk pace, kept my interest and had a good balance of established character action. Considering the time period the story takes place in, Zahn had to do a pretty good dance at avoiding contradicting other stories from the period and still coming up with something new...I recommend it.

I'm also on board (quite enthusiastically) with recommending "Darth Bane"...it's one of the ones you can't put down once you start, very well-told.

If it's Trooper action you're into, Karen Traviss' "Republic Commando" books are quick reads that are quite good...which surprised me comsdiering the source for the story were video game characters...but she has a great grasp of military jargon, and the moral implications of living as a clone plus alot of good action.

I'm really looking forward to reading the Vader Novel. So far what I've read has only improved my love for SW.

You'll love it, Josh. So much good stuff in that one.

The Vader/Palpatine dynamic? Check.

More cool Clones? Check.

More Jedi Purging? Check.

Armored Vader kicking ass? Check.

More answered questions and ties to the OT? Double Check.
