Why the **** would beams of light have weight?

These are the greatest fighters in the galaxy. They have the ability to sense other beings, predict attacks, and even mind control. Their weapons are light as feathers and can burn through just about any material. That's a recipe for some pretty damn unearthly battles.

The duels in the OT weren't bad and they don't ruin my experience of the OT, but it makes no sense for the strongest beings in the galaxy to fight so slow and stiff.

PT lightsaber combat > OT lightsaber combat

its not weight per se.
but putting in physics, resistance force.

that said, sidious vs. shaft and the B-team was weak as shat.:lecture

This says it all: :lol

Yeah, Phantom Menace's duels are shoulder to shoulder with the Empire and Jedi.

My favorite part was when Obi-Wan loses his **** on Maul when the laser wall comes down. They were tapping into ANH (seeing your mentor get cut down before your eyes like Luke) and ROTJ (using your anger to wail on your opponent).

Of course. Not all of it was great. The Windu vs Sidious duel was a disgrace. So poorly choreographed it's cringe-worthy.

Not really. That's one 5-second bit of a very long, excellent and skillful duel.

Obi-Wan vs Maul and Anakin vs Obi-wan are the best duels in the saga so far IMO.

Corrected :)

I don't even mind that twirling the two of them do, that wasn't a problem for me. I think them swinging on wires and fighting on that lava sliding antenna was goofy. Still a good fight though.

But what follows the duels is just as important, a critical component of adding gravatis to the purpose behind the battle to begin with.

Empire we got "I am your father!"

ROTJ we got Vader's redemption and the Emporer destroyed.

TPM we got "Weesa going home!"

Jar Jar says that way before the climactic duel against Darth Maul tho! :lol

C'mon Jye you hateful padawan, the TPM duel does have a "critical component of gravitas". Qui-Gon was killed and his dying words to Obi-Wan is to train Anakin. Obi-Wan decided to take him under his wing (despite being against Qui-Gon training him throughout the movie), that's pretty significant. Qui-Gon's funeral and the whole "mystery of the Sith" thing is pretty decent.

has "badazz...well, that was stupid." in under a minute. :lol

As much as I love ESB and even ROTJ, TPM had the best saber action in the entire franchise imo. The other two did their best to degrade it, but TPM still stands up regardless.

The door opening to show Maul before the duel is one of my favourite movie moments ever, was a shame about everything before it!

The ESB and ROTJ lightsaber duels were both pretty good, but I have no interest in seeing another ANH-style lightsaber duel. I feel like, by and large, the lightsaber battles were one of the things the prequels actually did well (I'll grant you the lightsaber battle that ensued when the Jedi went to arrest Palpatine was bad, but I thought most of the other ones were well done). I don't blame them for the Vader/Obi-Wan fight in ANH being the way it was. Getting an aging Alec Guiness to try to put up any kind of credible duel would have been pretty much impossible, and back when it was filmed, using a stunt double wouldn't have looked very convincing. From a narrative point of view, it kind of works, because Obi-Wan really wasn't fighting Vader to beat him, as much as he was buying time for the others, but it really isn't much to watch. To me, it's one of the least exciting scenes of the whole movie.
