Been thinking a bit more about the movie and here's a couple of extra thoughts...
I think that, all of their failings aside, in the prequel movies Lucas gave us a much larger universe. He gave us strange planets and political intrigue and different, exotic civilizations, not least of all the Republic.
Now Disney and Abrams (and Kasdan) have made that universe small again...
We're back to a bunch of rebels, a totalitarian regime, and scavengers. Is that all there is to have in the SW universe?
The planets look just like corners of the earth. There's a certain sense of wonder that is missing from this new Disney-led SW. Lucas gave them (and us) such an enormous canvas to play with, and they made it small again.
Now I know people will say they'd rather have a better story in a smaller universe, but I'm not really sure it's a better story, and if it were, why not have it take place in that larger, more intriguing universe?
I guess in the end, people really don't like new. Fans seem to mostly just want the same thing. So, in that regard, I suppose TFA is a great success.
And, just to be clear, I do like the movie, I really enjoyed it.
Somebody mentioned the music, and I have to agree that the music was thoroughly forgettable. OT and PT have much better music. In fact, I think the PT is among Williams' finest work. Not so in TFA. As somebody mentioned, the only real stand outs were the bits rehashed from the OT.
