Yeah no way in hell do I have the will power to hold out until the 3D version.

I actually don't give a damn about 3D for movies that were not filmed with that in mind, so I'm good. But I'll get that release as well IF it also includes a lot of extra content (not on this release).

No way used droid salesman that Falcon escape was freaking awesome in 3D as was that Star Destroyer sticking its front end out to the tip of my nose.

Of course it was "filmed with that in mind." It's not like Abrams shot the film with the assumption that it'd be a 2D release and then after he was done Disney said "now convert it!" He knew it was going to be a big 3D thing and at the very least he staged the visual effects with that in mind. I agree that films shot in native stereo 3D tend to look better but scenes rendered in a computer, not on film, always look equally good in 3D whether the rest was post-converted or not. I think saying "I don't want it because it was added after the fact" would be like saying "I don't want Gollum in LOTR because the cameras weren't really filming *him,* he was added later." ;)

I agree with Abrams himself:

"As someone who really hasn’t been the most vocal advocate of 3D, the strangest thing happened to me on this. When I was watching the reels in 3D, there were a number of shots — and I know this sounds insane — that I hadn’t understood in the three-dimensional space quite the way I did when I saw them in 3D. I actually felt that there were things that were playing better in 3D. I had never felt that before."

Well, of course they knew it would be post-converted (as pretty much all major releases are these days). I'm just saying that the cameras, cinematography and shots were not set up for 3D. The stereoscopic filming process is much different. Even the sequence filmed with IMAX cameras was shot as a standard 2D film.

I sounds like there may have been some sub-conscious "happy accidents", though. So that's cool. But I'll never consider this a 3D film.

I'm thinking I'll just get the standard release for now. The star field background with just the logo feels the most Star Wars-y out of the bunch to me.

Yeah, I almost wish they didn't even bother putting that busy Photoshop ugliness inside the letters either.

What a god-damned shame that the Struzan artwork wasn't used for the release poster, or this.

The announcement made no mention of the IMAX aspect ratio for the Falcon chase. I wonder if they're saving that for the 3D release later this year.

Not sure. The 70mm IMAX showings were NOT in 3D. Who knows if they even bothered post-converting the full IMAX sequence it in that aspect ratio in 3D.

Yeah, I know that the 70mm IMAX film projections were 2D, but there were other IMAX auditoriums (I don't mean the AMC liemax screens) that showed it in digital 3D on those 7 story screens. And both the 3D large format IMAX and 3D liemax did indeed have expanded aspect ratios for the Falcon chase. So I wonder if they're saving that for the later blu-ray.

You had to buy the 3D Guardians of the Galaxy to get the IMAX ratio at home so there is a precedent.

Hmm. Will given that precedent, I imagine that would be where they'd present the IMAX ratio on Blu-ray (if indeed they do).

Speaking of ratios... go visit the VVITCH thread... ;)

It was a shame. Seemed like such a no-brainer. I got the impression that Abrams went out of his way to personally get Struzan involved and then Disney had the poster RIGHT FREAKING THERE and they still decided not to use it.

I'd be okay if they wanted to use the IMAX poster art for the 3D release though:

Yeah, I actually like that poster A LOT more than the standard release one. Though my favorite is still the simple Teaser poster, which I happily have framed and hanging in my Den. :)

I'm a movie poster collector and I didn't care for the Struzan poster, not that the one they used was great or anything, but the Struzan poster looked Tired to me.

As far as Star Wars posters go, my favorites are...

Star Wars Style A (Tom Jung, not the Hildebrandt nightmare)
Star Wars style C (both, but the British Quad looks better)
Star Wars style D (circus design)
Empire Strikes Back style A (gone with the wind style)
Return of the Jedi Advance (the hand holding the lightsaber)

After that, there's nothing that special to me.

I agree that Struzan's TFA art wasn't his best. I hate to say it but I think even the prequels had better poster composition. But it's all we have. I've got a nice rolled 27x40 print from the D23 convention that I look forward to having framed.

I also own an original rolled ESB style A (rolled and framed) and a 27x40 reprint of the 1978 circus style D Star Wars (not yet framed) and a framed Kazo Sano 1994 ROTJ re-release one-sheet.

:exactly: :lecture

I have a couple style A's, the Style A British quad, the Style D record promotion version, which is exactly the same but they added in a purple oval advertising the soundtrack, empire style C, ROTJ A and B, and a Revenge of the Jedi Advance.

I've never managed to get the Empire Style A or the Star Wars style C.

I have every version of the Prequel posters and the one sheet for TFA.

At one point I was going to trade my original rolled Blade Runner for an Empire A and Star Wars C, but I just couldn't go through with it.

I forgot to mention it, but I quite like the Return/Revenge Advance as well.

Yeah I have an original Style A ANH framed and have two original ESB hand drawn storyboards next to it. I probably should get them insured. :lol
I would love a copy of the TFA Struzan poster but it's so damn difficult to find an original from the convention at a decent price.

Gonna get all the retailers exclusive BD discs- love the Walmart packaging with BB8....
