I have many problems with TFA but no way in hell are the prequels better.

The prequels might be composed of more original material but what good is original material when it's atrocious.

Darth Maul battle kicks ass though, but so did Rey letting the force in during her battle.

Loved both those scenes! Difference between the two was the Maul battle was a diamond in a field of dry cow pies. The Rey battle was a powerful moment in a fairly strong film.

Yep, I do see prequel defenders, James Cameron included, always carrying on about how "the prequels were more visually innovative." But who cares if you're just going to use said "innovation" to create Jar Jar Binks, Boss Nass, Dex Jexster, Ben Quadinaros, CG senior citizens cork-screwing through the air with lightsabers extended, etc.

A couple weeks back I was watching ESB and was just amazed at how elegantly filmed it was when Darth Vader flew down that entire carbon freezing chamber staircase in one leap to land at Luke's feet. They totally "cheated" the maneuver by just showing Vader leave the ground and then quickly cutting to him landing at the bottom but it looked completely real. That was how they used the Force in lightsaber combat back in the day and it was brilliant. Fast forward to 2005 where a cartoony Dooku is sommersaulting over railings and Palpatine is doing his Superman thing around his office. Those scenes looked faked as hell even in the theater while the ESB moment *still* looks real.

Well, that's the classic case of less is more.

Lucas had these amazing tools but didn't know when Not to use them. For me, TESB duel is still the best, not cause it was flashy, not cause it had amazing superhuman feats, but because it felt real, and the whole time you knew Luke was horribly outmatched, but you still hoped he might persevere, which made the ending all the more tense.

That's where I give JJ/Kennedy/Disney credit for going back to that less is more approach with the lightsaber battle, and I hope it remains that way.

If I never see another twirling old man in a SW movie i'll be just fine. :lol

I think this scene from ROTJ had an influence on Nolan's TDKR

:lecture Though I do admit that they went "less is more" to a fault. I would have loved to have seen an A-Wing or two or even some brand new fighters accompanying the X-Wings to Starkiller Base. But they erred on the side of caution I suppose.

Thank God Lucas went "backwards" in 1999 and made the prequels instead of continuing the stories of Han, Luke, and Leia. Just imagine watching old Jedi Master Luke doing this ****:
