Just because you have the technology to make everything look super realistic doesn't mean it has to be used IMO. Often it's going to depend on the goals of the creative team, and the aesthetic feel that they want to produce. Practical effects--generally speaking--have a certain charm and appeal that is lost in many films nowadays that go the total CG route in the pursuit of cost savings and/or the pursuit of the most realistic possible result. I don't think that's just nostalgia talking. ET, Gizmo in Gremlins, Yoda (from the OT), R2, 3PO, Kermit the Frog, and Miss Piggy (even Slimer) are some of the most beloved characters in movies, and this was despite their not being full CG creatures like your Smeagels or Jar Jars. Could they have been done well with CG? Maybe. Yoda was pretty good in the prequels. But it worked fine without CG, and at the same time maintained a level of tactcile realism that guys doing CG still have a hard time with.

Having said all that, it's always possible that the shot today will have very little bearing on the overall approach to these movies, so maybe guys who want totally CG aliens will be more than satisfied when all is said and done. This approach could be reserved simply for background or comedic characters.

Andy Serkis is in this. Looking at his filmography its a safe bet there will be CG creature akin to Gollum in this. Unless he's himself or just voicing this puppet merchant guy :lol

The best way is mixing the cgi with practical stuff in a nice blend. PT feels too sterile and not a lived in world.

Well that small video got me more excited about this movie than the group shot of all the actors. Just seeing a creature that actually exists and actors can actually interact with means this movie will feel more real than all of the prequel trilogy. It felt very ROTJ and I see no problem with that. I'm sure JJ will use some CG creatures also but will have a healthy mix of muppets. This small video truly has me believing Episode 7 will bring back the magic of Star Wars.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! haha. ROTJ is a guilty pleasure but in my opinion the weakest of the 3 OT, mainly because it felt the need to be a Jim Henson muppet film, whether with Jabba's palace or the Ewoks (yes I know they were real people, but the look in costume, is the same).

This movie simply has to be ESB good to wash the taste of three prequels out of many a fan's mouth.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

I would accept ROTJ good. To me that'd be great actually as I love Jedi but I'm going on where most people rank it as the weakest of the OT.

It's my fav too and makes ESB an even better film.

It has the best space battle at the end.

Well no Empire is my fave, I'm just saying I do love Jedi so if Episode VII were on a par with it, I would not consider that a bad thing.

I think ESB is a better movie I just always like Jedi most. Although next week I may like ANH best. Lol

I just want it to be as good as any of the original 3 and I'll be happy.

ESB has the perfect multi-world, multi-storyline structure. Not to mention, I think it had the best writing and acting of the OT. I just hope Abrams can hit it out of the ballpark. Most people I know have such low expectations, I'm sure whatever he does as long as it is not anything like the prequels, it will suffice.

I will always love Jedi best because of one thing:

Every scene set in the Throne Room.
