i thought Maul's voice was perfect... it had an almost distinguished vibe... educated... collected... not the stereotypical villain voice at all.

Agreed. I loved his voice as well. Maul is one cool mofo. I can say that because I haven't seen CW and have very little knowledge of the things they did to destroy his character the way the prequels tried to do to Boba Fett.

"Less is more" definitely applied to him. Had he had more than a smattering of lines, or had they tried to flesh out his character further, he probably would have turned everyone off to him. I know folks complained about him being killed off so early in the series, but I think it's for the best that we never saw him riding one of those weird dragons, or jumping around in the droid factory, or killing "younglings," or bantering with Yoda, etc.

How would he know what Vader sounded like? Does he have footage of Vader?

No! He didn't have footage, although he might have. It's most certainly possible he heard his voice through the force, just like Luke heard Kenobi.

How? He's been dead for at least 30 years, and once he became a ghost like Kenobi he was Anakin, with his normal non-robotic voice.

I'm sure there are recordings that he has heard. I can't imagine somebody as "big" as Vader's voice just disappeared from the entire galaxy.

Midi-chlorians.

He made me briefly forget about the taxation of trade routes.

Obviously Vader's voice box was a model made by some manufacturer. Perhaps it was discovered while rummaging through vaders remains. I'm just speculating on the voice.
