I really hope this movie surprises even the naysayers and is the most thrilling ride since ESB. That the characters and creatures end up being likable, relatable and instantly iconic. Makes me realize just how much Abrams took on his shoulders when he agreed to directing the sequel. I can't think of many other directors, if any, who would have been up to the task. This is so much more than about making money or selling toys, because the movies are practically guaranteed to do that. It's really about recapturing a magic and an optimism that is almost impossible to find these days.
That shouldn't be too hard really. It better be better than Jedi, TPM, AOTC (yuk!) and ROTS.
If its not, it's a fail.

Reminds me of one day at college in 2000 a friend and I were talking about SW and this other student walked up to us and said she thought Palpatine might be the Emperor from Jedi.
I had that one aswell. Oh along with the theory that the Clone troopers would go on to become Stormtroopers.

I built the Lego First Order transporter today with my son. It's really pretty cool and very reminiscent of military beach landing vehicle from the war.
Mixed with the fact it's carrying flame troopers to torch some unsuspecting natives and their village, you get an idea how bad these new baddies really are.
It's a scary Nazi looking thing. The First Order are gonna be seriously nasty in a way that The Empire were only suggested. Like it a lot.

I think they dismissed EU because it was all over the place and would limit their storytelling in the future. That's not to say there aren't good ideas from EU that won't show up in the new canon, either directly or with some modifications. I'm all for the next generation of Skywalkers, and even hope it's twins, but being forced to put Jaina, Jacen, Darth Caedus, etc. paints them into a corner, and I'd guess that some of those stories aren't terribly great. I remember trying to get through an EU audiobook about the twins and it was a dreadful snorefest. I'm not exactly sure what is and is not new canon beyond the movies and Clone Wars TV series. I imagine it includes the Dark Horse comics, not sure about any of the novels or the Old Republic video and computer games (I never played them but my son did). But while it means some cool characters might be going by the wayside, I'm sure far more subpar storytelling will be going along with it.

Thats like the time I went to see Phantom Menace in the theater with a group of friends. After the movie one woman in our group thought Anakin was Luke Skywalker. Ummm hello they called him Anakin throughout the whole film.

**** i really like what i'm seeing so far. Is anyone else here that's around 40 or so feel an excitement as i do toward this? That's been around since the old school days and dislikes the PT? I dunno about all this UN-crowning Empire talk, but if there ever was a time for it......
I just want to walk out of a SW movie for the first time since '83 and go "that was pretty damn cool". If this movie can do that, it will erase the last 3 (minus JW score)
And i don't even really care about nostalgia at this point, just honor the old movies in this one and move on (which is what they're doing it sounds like) Fans are gonna ***** no matter what and in the internet age nobody likes anything so enjoy this if it suits you.

I'm with you, but I can understand the cautious optimism many feel. My hopes are high, but I'm a grown man and can handle disappointment, as big a part as Star Wars has had in my life, in the end it's only a movie and only so much can come of it, good or bad.
Oh let's see... poor designs, though many think he's qwack a vision through 1-6 of a man turned evil to be redeemed by his son. EU destroyed and now luke a Virgin with no Wife (Mara Jade and Son Ben Skywalker). Chewie was supposed to die during Vong Invasion. Again Vong destroyed with EU. Funny how star wars... after 83 was kept alive through books, comics and stuff way after it was supposed to die out... then it just ****in eradicated like Alderrean by the Mickey Mouse Clubpire.
How long of a charade of same Empire vs Rebels do any of you want? 6 more damn movies to be same damn ending? Star Wars had morals and fantastic story telling... to me... new one is just rehash. It like getting a old ass spilt band together again for one to get drunk, other have heart attack and the drummer getting the lead singers granddaughter pregnant. **** just don't vibe anymore, there's a reason why Ozzy don't bite the bat head no more...
