I think TPM is the best of the prequels and it's the lightest overall tone of those films. Of course in 2002 and 2005 I was hoping for something better and I probably at the time thought I'd gotten that, swayed as most people were by the increase of lightsabers and familiar character names. That impression didn't last and I now find TPM more watchable.

So I don't necessarily require dark and gritty with the new films. More important is just giving us some likeable characters with believable story arcs and acting that isn't so damn wooden.

TPM is my favourite too, purely because of obi wan, qui gon and maul. The feel and effects of the film are the best. Episode 2 and 3 look cartoon-y

Last week end I started watching Ep.II on a whim, and I was surprised at how much I was enjoying it.
I like the PT, but AOTC was always the weakest link for me and yet, as I watched it, I realised that I was just having a great time.
Above all, I think I admire Lucas' willingness to tell the story he wanted to, as awkward as it sometimes ended up being.

An interesting idea, though he doesn't provide any evidence to support his hypothesis. One obvious counterargument off the top of my head is the Transformers films. They are all lowest-common-denominator tripe. They don't appeal to a genuine hardcore geek audience. They target themselves to kids and casual audiences fairly exclusively. There is no expiration date to the franchise, so they can and likely will do soft reboots when needed until the cows come home. Yet they keep bringing in the dough.

I fear the best strategy is simply to appeal to the "average" moviegoer early and often, and you'll not be let down with the box office receipts. Because frankly, if the franchise is going to have legs over long stretches of time, that's going to be due to the nostalgia factor trapping kids at an early age. And for that, you don't need genuinely good films. Just ones that entertain sufficiently in the right ways.

Some of its action scenes put it above ROTS for me. Obi-wan's battle with Jango Fett both in space and on the Kamino Landing platform and the Geonosis arena rescue with all the Gunships coming in, I love that vehicle.
