Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)
Jim Cameron is like life, he always "finds a way" to knock our socks off with each new movie. The general public doesn't really care about Avatar (at least in the US) but once that first trailer hits for Avatar 2 you *know* there's going to quite the "holy ****" factor. There always is with Cameron. Will the new film gross as much as the first? No way. Will it match TFA's domestic? No way. But I have a feeling that going forward the Avatar films will do better overseas and Star Wars will own the USA. And I'm sure Cameron and Fox will be just fine with that. I think the Avatar movies might turn out to be like Transformers, Fast & Furious, or POTC where no matter how good or bad they are they'll always hit a billion and just kill it worldwide. Obviously Disney will always covet having the highest grossing film in the world but Star Wars really is an American thing that is mostly for "us."
And that's fine.
Look at the quality of films on the adjusted for inflation domestic list. MUCH more prestigious classics than those on the unadjusted global list.
Domestic:
All Time Box Office Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation
1. Gone with the Wind
2. Star Wars
3. The Sound of Music
4. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
5. Titanic
6. The Ten Commandments
7. Jaws
8. Dr. Zhivago
9. The Exorcist
10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
11. 101 Dalmatians
12. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
13. The Empire Strikes Back
14. Ben-Hur
Global:
All Time Worldwide Box Office Grosses
1. Avatar
2. Titanic
3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
4. Jurassic World
5. Marvel's The Avengers
6. Furious 7
7. Avengers: Age of Ultron
8. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Pt 2
9. Frozen
10. Iron Man 3
11. Minions
12. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Sure the bean counters will always want their movie on list #2 but list #1 is by far the more respectable company to be in. TFA will pass Dalmatians tomorrow (right now it's only $6 million behind) and actually has a shot at cracking the top ten.
