It's better than when it was originally supposed time out in December 2018

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

May 2017 was the original release date.

And I half expected this to happen. Eighteen months between instalments is a big ask, even if they started on VIII before VII was finished.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

IMO Disney is simply trying to replicate what TFA did at the box office with a December release of Episode VIII.

I think that's definitely part of it. Though if Cameron sticks with his unofficial Dec 25th, 2017 release date for Avatar 2 then Episode VIII will lose a ton of IMAX screens just a week after release. Kind of lose-lose if Cameron/Fox doesn't blink. Interesting stand-off especially with that mega-million dollar theme park extension Disney was going to make for Pandora if they're now going to go head to head.

They are rewriting the story to give Rey, Poe, Finn all bigger roles. Star Wars Episode 8 will do big numbers no matter the release date.

Avatar 2 numbers? I think it'll do better than Avaturd personally. It was mentioned elsewhere but I don't believe we'd keep talking about Titanic or Avatar as often as we do if it weren't for their record box office numbers. But the theater companies will have a hard choice in deciding which movie to pick to screen.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

I can't picture any galaxy where Avatar 2 and SW Ep8 will open a week apart, same deal as BvS and CW. I imagine Fox will probably move Avatar 2, unless they wanna continue to make poor decisions after bombing FF. Yeah it's a bully move to put Ep8 that close to the date Avatar already flagged, but I'm partial to SW and don't care much for Avatar, so I'm 100% on board.

That'll be interesting! :lol

That may be true but so far that has been rumors based on "He said/She said" from what I've read. Anyway, like you stated regardless of the release date, it will make lots of scratch on opening weekend.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

One bummer about the move to December is that the Thursday night showings for Episode VIII's opening weekend in May would have had it debuting 40 years *to the day* after the original opened in 1977 which would have been kind of cool.

One bummer about the move to December is that the Thursday night showings for Episode XIII's opening weekend in May would have had it debuting 40 years *to the day* after the original opened in 1977 which would have been kind of cool.

Holy crap, Episode 13! They're really skipping ahead! ;)

Nobody gives a **** about Avatar any more so Avatar 2 will probably shift back.

Yeah how true- Avatar 2 will open to weak numbers- I can't find ONE person I know who even has a remote interest in the sequel. I had no idea it was going to come out that soon- hasn't even started shooting yet?

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

No, not that we know. Jim Cameron always takes forever to shoot his movies now... he's only made three in the last eighteen years. :lol

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

I don't think Avatar 2 will open weak, it will be accompanied by a huge advertising campaign (much like Star Wars) and the general public will show up in droves. It won't have the legs the first one had and it won't approach the box office success of the first.

Also, it is likely that 95% of the people on this forum will go see it, no matter how much we all say the first one sucks.

I don't think it sucks, I just don't think it deserves the acclaim it got.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

I'll be seeing Avatar 2 six times on opening day as well as sacrificing my son for Jim.
