Ah, feels like 2015 again.

Who does Boba Fett snitch on? He wasn't allied with the rebels. He was hired by Vader to hunt Han and Leia and he does just that. He fulfills his purpose by capturing Han and taking him to Jabba the Hutt. No comparison between Fett and Phasma. Fett actually moved the plot forward in Empire and had some good moments while looking cool doing it, Phasma is a repeated gag that has done absolutely nothing in these movies. She's not even the one that found Finn, Rose, DJ and BB8 in TLJ, it was the bad BB8 droid thing. She just shows up for a minute to die. Phasma does nothing in TFA. She gets thrown in the trash. Phasma does nothing again in TLJ, she's there so Finn can quip about being rebelscum before she falls down a chute yet again. I'm sure Episode 9 will be no different. Kiddie Boba Fett and Jango in one movie did more than she ever did. Atleast those characters have a purpose in the story and plot, as well as being created for toys. Phasma does nothing. It's just like when people try and claim that Luke Skywalker is a Mary Sue when their beloved Rey gets knocked for being an awful, overpowered "character".

But yeah, just keep trying to throw those original films under the bus to prop up these awful sequels.

And why didn’t Vader just pull Luke up after he jumped...

We just saw him rip giant metal objects off the wall and hurl them at him?

Why why why.

That's not even an argument or plot hole.

Your son choosing to plummet to his death rather than join you would be a pretty shocking burn. Also, if you just had Vader pull him up, it ruins Luke's bold decision, is anti-climatic and not very cinematic.

I first discovered Star Wars going into the newsagent on the way home from infant school, as I always did to pick up the local paper for my parents.

There were a lot of kids inside and there was excitement over a new comic book...

I had no idea what Star Wars was but I got caught up with the excitement and did a rash thing and spent the newspaper money on the comic.

When I got home I was told off for not buying the paper. It was a tough time economically for my parents, so I was filled with so much guilt. I felt ashamed to read the comic, but I was fascinated by it. And completely hooked.

I eventually found a copy of the novel in a jumble sale, so I had colour photos to pore over.

With ESB I bought the novel through the school's book club, but didn't get to see the film in the cinema. Around that time I bought my first Kenner figure, Hammerhead, from the local toy shop that also did video rentals - back when videos cost their weight in gold. :lol

The next day at school I swapped Hammerhead with a kid for a Vader and a Tusken Raider, because two figures seemed a better deal than one.

By 1983 things had turned round economically. The Early 1980s recession forced my parents to make a changes, and they went self-employed.

So the money was coming in and I got to see ROTJ at the cinema. This was my golden age for Star Wars. All the toys and the elaborate displays in the department stores like Debenhams, with TVs playing footage from the film, and a guy dressed as Darth Vader signing autographs. Unfortunately it wasn't Dave Prowse as he signed them 'Darth Vader'.

It had been reported in the Eagle comic in the early '80s that Lucas was going to make a total of nine Star Wars films. So I waited. And I waited. Reading and re-reading the EU novels, studying West End Games' SW RPG. And I waited some more.

Until 1999.

And...what did you do George? All those years for that? :gah:

We entered the period that Obi-Wan might've called the "dark times".

Well, until the end of ROTS and the emergence of Vader again.

Compared to the Prequels TFA and TLJ feel like a return to form. Along with RO they have in them elements that bring me back to the films and the early EU.

But storywise the ST has gone off in a tangent with Han/Leia/Kylo that's at odds with where I wanted George's 7, 8 and 9 to go.

What a great story....my own mirrors yours in a lot of ways. That comic rings back so many memories.....

Unfortunately I don't have that comic now as it was lost at some point. But I still have all the ROTJ comics I was collecting each week, and all the novels I originally picked up. Plus the West End Games RPG collection, which I added to over the years.

I've been watching those 'Silent Serial' edits of the OT and PT today. And hands down, this is the best version of TPM I've ever seen:

With the distractions stripped away you can see the purer intent, the genius of Lucas before he got a bit carried away himself.

Everything looks so right when you can't hear the voices of the Battle Droids, and when Jar Jar's antics have been minimised. This is how I tried to selectively watch the PT when I decided I was going to give it a fair chance.

Oh no what is Disney to do now that TLJ bombed in China!

How will they handle the news that TLJ is still the # 1 movie of 2017 without the need of China’s box office rescue, how I ask!

Oh how embarrassing it is to still BE the # 1 movie without China, very shameful.

Oh look TLJ toys are still on the shelves.

TFA made 2.2 billion and their toys are still on the shelves as are DC, Transformers and Power Rangers!

Gee could it be that since the introduction of the Playstation 1 plus Nintendo dominance, the Xbox, smart phones, tablets and online gaming that kids playing habits have changed over the past 23 years, shocker I know!

Did anyone stop to think that JUST MAYBE the increasing cost of gaming with the likes of Mario, Zelda, COD, GTA, Minecraft, Pokemon, FIFA, NFL, Car Racing, GOW, Zombies, Fighting, Rocket League and this list can go on forever has impacted toy sales in the past 23 years and shifted the profits over to the electronics side, no that can’t be say it ain’t so.

I know that my son only games and doesn’t ask for action figures, legos or playsets, sorry to say but I bet most of toy collecting is now for us adults trying to recapture our childhoods.

Nothing has changed kind sirs and Kennedy haters, TLJ EVEN WITHOUT CHINA’S HELP is still the # 1 movie of 2017, I know I know that’s a hard bitter pill to swallow for some.

Like Obi-Wan said to Padme in ROTS: “TLJ is still # 1 even without China isn’t it, I’m so sorry”.

Or as Cap always says....”I can do this all day”

What else you got fellas lol

Don't forget the toys. Target, Toys R Us and Walmart are still over flowing with red and black boxes full of TFA, RO and now TLJ product.

I went to get a toothbrush last night and the top shelves were packed with tons of those Snoke playset things. Pegs and shelves full of nothing but product nobody wants from 2015 and 2016. Very reminiscent of 2000-2002. What a disaster.

Now there's more Han Solo stuff on the way, yay!

I would say toys are generally dead....

Kids do not play like we did ....and most of those toys the last few years were bought by adults.

LEGO and their rise to the level they have over the years in due to adults....kids are not buying 400.00 LEGO sets.

Whenever I walk by the toy isles in Target, especially LEGO and Star Wars....it’s not little kids I see . It’s older people clearly buying for themselves....

That’s not to say the overall disappointment in the film didn’t affect the purchases that could have been made.

That’s your takeaway from his role in Empire?

If you picked up on more than that it's because it was intentional. He was supposed to be the main villain in E6 but then GL decided he only wanted to make 3 movies so he crammed all of the rescue of Han Solo scenes in the first act. Hence the half-assed (supposed) death of BF. Whoops!

That's why Shadows of the Empire was created, I think.

Well, I'm pointing out that you are belittling people when you take their criticisms and dismiss them as "much ado about nothing."

I said "largely much ado about nothing." I find some complaints to be valid while most are not. It was a blanket statement and I didn't specify which complaints I put in which category (valid vs much ado about nothing) so if you're so touchy that you automatically assigned your own complaints to the latter category then that's on you.

From what I have seen personal attacks are the mainstay of defending this film, from the mild ("vocal minority") to the demonizing ("racist", "misogynist").

Then you haven't been following the thread. Nice hypocrisy there to complain that I "belittled" people by calling out most complaints as much ado about nothing while you yourself dismiss all opinions to the contrary as nothing but personal attacks.

Hahaha, man never upset the Boba fan’s.

I never liked Boba Fett. As a kid I remember his figure and Chewie, Vader being the most popular ones amount most kids. Hell in my neck of the woods Han was ever more popular than Luke was.

Me , I liked Yoda, Royal Guard, Greedo and Hammerhead.....

I only brought up the why why why scenarios to illustrate the depths people will go to defend a childhood love of these films....even though a lot of the time there were some ridicules stuff in there.

It’s a film about space wizards, and I don’t think there is any comparison between the OT and ST that can be made at this point when one considers the effect it had on us as children.

Ask some 60-70 year olds if they give a crap about OT compared to ST. To a lot of those people , OT was just as disposable as ST.

I didn't care for Boba in OT.
He was cool looking, had cool voice and did sometihng to move the plot from ESB to ROTJ.

PT and Clone Wars series made me like him a lot as a character.

I noticed some time back that I really enjoyed Phantom Menace when I had it on mute. These silent versions look really cool. I’m currently working on an edit of TPM where I try to reduce the worst of Ani and Jar Jar. I’ve stripped much of the silliness out of the pod racing scene to reduce its overall length and tone.

The biggest issue (which is solved in those serials) is that the audio tracks of the dialogue and music are blended together even with the Dolby 5.1 so it makes editing out small bits of dialogue exceedingly difficult if there’s music going on at the same time.

The other issue is obviously that even much of the bad stuff is setting up later scenes or is referred to in later scenes (I’m no editor so dealing with this is new to me).

Speaking of video games: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/star-wars-battlefront-2-sales-november-2017-12

And Boba didn’t capture anyone....he basically told the Empire where Han went....then took delivery of TV dinner Han and brought him to the gangster space slug for his decorating needs.

I consider him wasted character , how much better would it have been to see Boba actually fight Han and Chewie to capture them? Hell a short space battle with the Slave-1 would have been great.

Phasma is no Boba, but that’s not saying much..

I think the ones that didn't like TLJ like me are all in denial or in Bizzaro world, looks like the Lucas/Disney train is at full speed leaving without us! Our pleas for help have been muffled by the cash register dings of the all powerful Star Wars. We have lost this battle friends, I guess i need a new Franchise. How good are the Transformers movies?

My son and his friends are all about the Legos, nerf guns and Hot Wheels, my daughter collects the bobbleheads. Kids still like SW "toys" even if it they aren't into the 3.75 inch figures like we were.

I know that my son and I are enjoying the hell out of it lol

Hey did you hear TLJ is STILL # 1 movie of 2017 even with it bombing in China lol

Boba pretty much is Phasma cool looking yet useless.

Sure he followed Han to Bespin but he literally followed them right on the Falcon’s tail yet I don’t hear complaints about that lol

Go watch the scene again in ESB right on the Falcon’s butt :lol

Yes, going the silent route, which is largely prior to the serials that influenced Lucas, does solve the problem of dialogue. (I say largely because he took the Raiders rolling boulder from the 1914 The Perils of Pauline).

Of the six I've watched so far TPM was the best as it seemed to lend itself most to the format. It's very reminiscent of watching Metropolis.

I've collected 57 serials, only a few are the early silent ones. Most are from the 1930s to the early 1940s, which was best period. After that the genre was declining in quality, and often relying on stock footage from earlier series to keep costs down.

It's particularly interesting if you're into Indiana Jones because you can find complete scenes that Lucas and Spielberg copied (i.e. paid homage to!)
