Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

If a character like Poe turns out to be gay, I am totally fine with it. Nothing has been established really about Poe except he is a great pilot and likes Finn a lot. Finn, on the other hand, is established that he "likes" Rey. He seemed disappointed she wanted to back to Jakku so bad and wanted to know if she had a boyfriend. The way he said it implied he has interest in her other than friendship.

I do hate when they try to force PC into films or books. And I have many gay friends who also hate it because it feels fake. If a character is gay, make it feel organic and not a big deal. Like I said, if Poe is revealed to be gay, I wouldn't care at all. Unless it's handled in such a way that they have to make it a HUGE DEAL we have a gay character in SW. "Look at us! Aren't we progressive!!!!" Ughhhh......

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

I'm not horrified by the existence of gay characters in a fictional story but I do think that sexual orientation isn't a topic that should be brought up in kids' movies nor do I think established icons should be retconned to meet some progressive quota. Aaron on The Walking Dead is one of the more likable characters on the show and I actually cringed when it seemed like he might get killed a few episodes back. But again, that's not exactly a show that I watch with my kids.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

Where is it established in Star Wars canon that Luke is heterosexual?

Gay men often show some interest in women due to social norms before settling into their sexuality. Luke's only faint hint at sexual attraction in his late teens involves a woman who turns out to be his sister. Compared to Han's courtship, he's like a match compared to a flamethrower.

In fact if Luke is childless and unmarried in the new trilogy, his being gay is perfectly consistent with that newly highlighted aspect to his character.

I'm amused to see Mark Hamill himself denounced as an "SJW," since that is whence this 'controversy' arrises.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

Because Star Wars categorical did not deal with issues this complex. Luke was a character based on "a heroes journey".
These are symbolic fables, sexuality should never come into these movies in an effecting way. I couldn't give a damn if Lando and Chewie were high school sweethearts as long as it doesn't become a necessary part of the narrative. That's not what Star Wars has been to this point. Kids make up their own ideas of who these characters are, and who they relate to. Ambiguity is the key to that, not explicit fact. Luke Skywalker has been around as a character for most of our lives, his sexuality never mattered, it would be horrible point maker to do it now.

It won't anyway. Disney are smarter than that. And Hamill was just being kind.

No one is calling Hamill a SJW. He was dodging a question to be sympathetic and not upset that kid and now the SJW are pushing this crap forward.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

I think what Hamill said was that his character could be whatever a person needed it to be for that person to find comfort, and if they viewed Luke as gay so be it.

I certainly don't view Luke any more gay than Rocky, Rambo, Mclane or Murphy though.

Bingo, no one should giv a **** about anyone's sexual orientation in these movies, it's irrelevant.

Just imagine them at a party wearing black leather. :wave

Hollypoop already gave us "the right" version of RoboCop two years ago:

Exactly why JK Rowling never made it explicit in the Harry Potter books about Dumbledore. Sexuality in a children's fable is irrelevant. Hamill was just saying what he did to direct a journalists question and I doubt he meant it as a focal point of his character.

Yup, so many panties in a twist over these poorly written articles. MH basically just said " if Luke is gay in your view than he's gay." He left it open to individual interpretation.

JKR flat out stated Dumbledore was gay, but my interpretation of that character has always been asexual.

Its all in the eye of the beholder.

Or maybe it's just because he's a Jedi.

Heck, who knows what the "norm" is in the Star Wars galaxy anyway. Maybe even what we call incest isn't taboo.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec 15th, 2017)

Mark Hamill is indeed a kind and gracious individual. When a fan pleaded for online sympathy he gave a very brief and vague answer. I don't think he meant it to be this big issue or huge declaration and simply decided to play both sides to allow maximum enjoyment of his character. Harrison Ford has also chosen the "vague" road when it comes to controversy over his character. Remember his response to the one interviewer who asked him "who shot first?" Ford's reply: "I don't know and I don't care." Brilliant. :lol

I'm good with Hamill. It's just Disney that I'm concerned about. They are crusaders of the gay agenda and they don't hide that fact. However some of you really are making me believe that they wouldn't be stupid enough to create such unnecessary controversy in their most profitable film franchise. I don't know that there's anything more I need to say on the topic unless it really does become a reality on screen one day.

You'll know that Disney will when they come out with a Danish Girl Princess Movie. :lol

Or maybe he's childless and unmarried by simple choice like me. Don't want kids and after dating my share of crazy women didn't want to get married. Being unmarried doesn't make you gay :lol
