What makes me kind of sad is that there really was no reason we couldn't have had new SW movies with a badass older Luke as the lead, and Han in the mix. Liam Neeson style.

It's this myth that SW is for kids I guess, and studios have to have that "passing of the torch" bs. Kind of like Harrison to Shia LaBeef, or in a different way, Bill Murray to Melissa McCarthy.

SW certainly was for kids... in the 1970's and 80's.

TFA has created new fanbase with their new character line and new universe. Luke has performed his part well, now Disney and Kathleen no need of Luke anymore :). I think he will die in TLJ.

As you said, SW is for kids now. One perfect example, cartoon animated seires "Clone Wars" was axed and replaced by kid show "Rebels" due to Clone wars violent, dark theme and political stuffs which is not suitable for their new target audience.

Disney clear intention was to purge old Lucas legacy and build their own SW universe and target new audience (KK did mention new SW is not clearly for the old fanbase - which majority is male anymore). So I could see the path that Disney and Kk is going now :).

:exactly:

I cant wait to see how SNIKT defends this movie once everyone realises this movie is EVERYTHING SNIKT complained about with the fox/ disney deal :lol :lol :lol

Carrie's passing showed exactly why they didn't go with the old generation. And even Mark hasn't been looking too great this press tour, out of breath, one time even spotted in a wheelchair. They're too old now. If you've wanted a trilogy on them being badass, they should've done it at the time of the prequels, or at the very latest started it when RotS was released. Neeson is in great shape, you can't really compare Hamill and Fisher to him, they kind of let themselfs go as years passed by.

And if you, as a company, only target one generation from the 70's/80's, then you're committing yourself to being a dying brand, seeing as most in that generation probably don't have 30 years left.

Anyway, most leaks so far can't really be confirmed if they're fake or not, so I wouldn't buy them just yet, I guess we'll find out in a few days, or some even quicker..

I'm talking about PT era, but even 5 years ago after Disney entered the picture. And Hamill is no De Niro, but he could have had a movie arranged around him and Harrison. Hamill atrophied due to being exiled from SW for decades - it didn't have to play out that way.

And when I say it's not for kids, I'm just citing the demographics that powered TFA and RO. Which is majority over 25's (average for RO was 35) - not kids or even teens. Kids and teens see these new movies, but they aren't the primary audience.

And the spoiler stuff on RPF is not fake. This isn't 3 weeks before release date - it opens in 48 hours in some countries.

Now how would I know that? For me, Figuarts is the wrong scale.

I just want to know if those characters are awesome enough in the new movie to warrant spending the money on action figures for them, whatever scale. Eh, I'll have to decide that myself Saturday. Anyway, have fun today, I hope it ends up being a great movie.

But targeting just the children at the expense of those 70s/80s fans is also an equal problem.

Kids are going to like whatever Disney tells them to like. Princess Leia dolls and Luke toys are still all over shelves. There's no reason they would not have accepted a series with them as leads (or atleast more prominent parts than they have been playing). Bringing a new audience in does not mean they have to sacrifice another to do so. Especially when those older fans are the ones keeping a lot of the fandom stuff going.

Star Wars is not simply just some kid movie. Its tapped into some greater appeal and has entered the collective cultural subconscious as a modern day greek myth. Same for Superhero films. They're for the kid in the audience just as much as they are for the parent that brought them.

I do agree with that, but I don't think Star Wars today is purely for kids? I mean, Rogue One is not a film for kids at all. And the Force Awakens is, well, about as much for kids as A New Hope is :rotfl But as I said, I think the old cast are just too old to carry the trilogy, they're too late for that, and younger people do tend to want to see younger people on screen as well. I mean, when you saw Star Wars for the first time, did you think I want to be Obi-Wan? Or did you want to be Luke or Han?

Sure, Rebels is for kids, and we all miss the Clone Wars. But I think we just have to be patient, just take a look at that other big Disney franchise: Marvel. They didn't start big, they had a film release a year, and that was it. Now we have 3 Marvel films a year with loads of television series. Mature series like The Punisher to series for teens, like the Runaways. I suspect this is in the Star Wars future as well, with content that fits you, to content you might want to skip. They have already announced a Star Wars live action tv series for that streaming service Disney wants to launch, so the signs are already there that we're getting more than just a kids tv animated series.

I do too. And certainly if you like the movie those would be the first characters to have from it.
