Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

There's new articles pooping up in the last hour saying how much fans are hating it - calling it the worst ever made... and I think this will just be the beginning.

Surely that must be an embellishment and a knee jerk reaction. I mean, there still is TPM and AotC. Even though I liked a few characters in TPM and a few moments in AotC, as a whole, I don't think a SW film can get any more boring than those.

Whenever a new film is released, it's either "the best film in the franchise" or "the worst film in the franchise". Both are usually knee jerk reactions fresh off of seeing the film.

Just got back. Raw thoughts: I’ll have to see it again to confirm feelings about it. It wasn’t bad. Lots of suspense. Funny. But not my fav SW.

It had lots of potential. I guess I felt a little un-satiated. Some really great moments. Some that I wasn’t sure about.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

I have friends who are life long fans who are saying they're done with Star Wars.

The toy commercial?

No, the little boy with the broom and Force powers who looks to the sky for a "when you wish upon a star" moment.

That's Disney's tag: that everyone and anyone can have the Force. Thus making it accessible to every little boy and girl, like Rap, and thus making it insignificant and common, like Rap.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

It just hit me last night ...

Star Wars has always played fast and loose with physics, so really this is nothing, but ...

Why do the Resistance ships stop when they run out of fuel? They're in space! They'd just keep going, forever!

The First Order plan, the basis of the 'tension' for the entire movie, would never have worked. I know, I know. Explosions in space. Space opera. It really doesn't matter. Feel free to drag me for worrying about it. But the thought has entered my brain, and that aspect is going to annoy me forever now :p There is sound and fire in space because of the 'language of cinema'. There is faster than light travel so that the interstellar setting works. Leia keeps floating away after she gets sucked into space. But the ships stop like they are trucks on a highway? Oh, the mild nerdy annoyance. And I know it is the dumbest thing to worry about. If the movie was great I would hand-wave that away.

A friend just described the First Order vs Resistance thing as 'exciting as a hot air balloon chase' and that rings true to me :p

I could never be done with Star Wars. I still can't rank this below AotC and TPM, I'm just not sure if I enjoyed it more than TFA. The books are always enjoyable enough as well. But I think the true fans are going to get in the head of Disney like critics/fans did for DCEU.

Haha. Yeah. There was no tension about it.

I don't get why a Star Destroyer didn't do a short light speed jump ahead and then back to be in front of the Rebel fleet and just blast them.

:lol

That's funny, didn't even think of that, but yeah.

Was the idea of zero gravity ever seen or mentioned in the classic trilogy? It obviously makes sense, but I don't recall the harsh "reality" of space being seen in classic SW. Like the scene inside the space slug/asteroid in ESB where they just walked out into an open cave only using a simple oxygen mask - no protective suits or low gravity gear. Maybe the Falcon generates gravity and atmosphere around it, but the concept just doesn't really come up from memory.

Even the concept of fuel - as we know it - is kinda visually hinted at (pipes going to X-wings etc) but the idea of the need to refuel after a long trip just never seemed to come up. Luke flies all the way to Dagobah and back without any apparent need for refueling. The Falcon flies from Mos Eisley all the way to death Star and Massassi seemingly without needing more fuel. You'd think Han would say "getting low on fuel, Chewy" or Luke would talk to R2 about the X-Wing getting low or something.

Makes the sequences with Leia in space and the whole "running out of fuel" plotline seem a bit strange. Very relatable in a real-world sense, but showing something that doesn't seem to be a concern in the classic SW universe.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Me either...

I'm looking forward to Solo. I bet those gold dice from the Falcon will play a part in the film next year...

For sure they will, they are the dice he used to win the Falcon from Lando which will no doubt take place during the film.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

I liked the movie, I didn't love it. Some good things in it like the opening and throne room. I do however have a feeling there will be a surplus of figures on the market once the initial interest dies down. I could not want the Dark Outfit Island Luke any less after seeing it. Good luck selling Executioner Stormtroopers and such. At least the Tr8tor Trooper from Force Awakens had a cool scene. Maybe Sideshow will have some new fodder for Spooktacular for the next few years...

Like I always say: nobody hates SW more than ironically the most die hard of SW fans. Your friends are a testament to this.
