So you're seriously putting down ANH to defend this crap?

I swear to God, we are living in a generation that welcomes bad movies.

The MCU is a social experiment on literally getting an entire demographic to happily digest mostly terrible cinematic content. SW is now apparently performing the same experiment.

I am saying from the POV of Obi Wan's life and Luke's life their roles in each movie were not unlike each other. Old men, seculed, not wanting to help, getting pulled in to help and doing something that caused their death that saved others. You see a tad emotional. Show me on the doll where the Last Jedi touched you.

Great post :clap:clap:clap:clap:clap At least, *in general* that's what I was seeing reading IMDB comments. Like Luke would never change - SOMEHOW. Like Carrie Fisher was always supposed to look hot in a slave outfit or whatever.:google

But my theater burst into applause more than once - something I don't see often. PS. I thought one of the best things too was Luke telling Kylo he had failed him. IMO there was awesomeness here.

Honestly holding on to those expectations is exactly what brings back fans. Hoping to at least be like oh Hey what if this was possible but now it’s nothing, there is zero motivation on trying to watch IX. A lot of fans are feeling that way, but that’s what they get. SW are like Tool fans.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Woke up today, and my opinion hasn’t really changed. Hamill was amazing. Flying space ship stuff was great. Snoke throneroom death/lightsaber stuff rocked. Kylo Ren was a highlite. I enjoyed the astral projection sacrifice thing for the most part. The idea of a resistance leader sacrificing themselves in the way they did is powerful, but I’m not sure they established her character well enough for me to care. I liked the evolved designs of the AT-AT and AT-ST.

But that casino stuff was absolute crap, too many going-for-lols that failed in cringe, and a complete disregard for established character in Luke with him being all ‘Hmmm maybe I should kill this kid in his sleep’ even for a moment — actually, a complete disregard for a lot of plot points and plot foreshadowing from The Force Awakens which probably should be a bigger point of contention but Luke is admittedly a childhood hero so there’s bias there with the severity of his poorly written mishandle. I think another cut in the editing room would have done wonders, but Disney is probably happy with their film for what it’s worth.

I walked out of the film without much anticipation for the next film which is a contrast to the excitement I had for this film leaving TFA.

I remember when AOTC came out people were crying about how someone like Yoda shouldn't need to use his lightsaber and jumping around like a monkey and he should have showed his mastery in the Force for his encounter with Dooku. Rian now gave us that and now you guys wants Luke to jump around like a monkey with a lightsaber.

I also remember how months ago people here were talking about how they don't really wanna see Luke jumping around or spinning around like Yoda slaying everything in his path cause he will look like an *** due to his age. And in this movie they gave us a look into a higher form of Jedi battle which is perfect for Luke and people are now crying that Luke did not jump around.

You really don't understand middle ground at all do you?

What part of wanting Luke to have a satisfying lightsaber fight demands that he "jump around like a monkey"?

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

I thought the movie was gimmicky at best. You know it’s a Disney movie now when the final shot is some wide-eyed kid staring up at the stars. Unless ep. 9 is mindblowingly great, the only SW worth collecting is the OT.

Undecided .... had good ole SW feels, had new SW feels and had wtf feels.

Kinda like not having a direct opinion one way or another...different than most of these type of films

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Read some of the viewers reviews (not the critics) on RT (down under 60% now)...
You'll see the critics here are not an alternate universe.

The movie officially opens tonight. Not that many people have seen it yet. So it's not really an accurate sample of reviewers. All my friends so far love it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I really don't understand some of the crazy critiques. It's like people wrote their own movie in their heads and can't deal with any other story. Nothing will be good enough for some people.

Really good point. I'm not unsympathetic for fans that are upset. But re comments I read, not sure what some people expect, really. For me the thing was, Luke, Leia, and Han by default are older. Torch is being passed. Would that be handled with respect? Or like some films try to spackle/CGI their faces and act like it was same old, same old?

So far I think the arcs for the three have been handled really well. For me so far especially Luke, ultimately. Even if Mark Hamill wasn't happy - he gave an outstanding performance.

Yeah. I mean, to me this was more "adult". IMO there were narrative/logic problems. WTF. Or what about??? Then brilliant moments. Jaw-dropping moments.

Maybe we are just really creative? :) I was thinking luke was going to bring down the first order forces outside the base, or maybe confront snoke or kylo and use force lightning himself, or the lightning rod his figure comes with, which I thought was a spoiler when I read it in the description, but just turns out he was just an old bitter hermit. His teaching amounted to about nil, he trains Rey in about 4 lessons, then she falls down the dark side *vashina* thing and sees herself in a mirror......umm yeah that was totally magic tree-esque.

Back then Palpatine only really has a role in ROTJ. (It was a totally different actor and voice in the original cut of ESB and it might as well have been a different character).

And he was unceremoniously killed by Vader and no one complained about his lack of story development and history. He was basically just the monster behind the monster which was a what Snoke essentially is in TLJ. He is just a plot device to build the character of Kylo like how Palpatine was a plot device to build the character of Vader (and Luke to a certain degree).

It seems everyone conveniently forgets that Palpatine backstory come like twenty years later via the PT

Good post. I had that same thought as I was mulling over my first viewing as he Snoke death really bothered me. I think the difference now is that we are in the other side of the backstory for Palpatine and our expectations are for more detail and for more linkage to what’s come before in the OT and PT. I think this is one of the fundamental decisions by Disney that emphasizes this is a soft reboot and a departure from the characters that got us here.

You can start new - you can depart and explore new characters - but there comes a point when this movie universe is star Wars in name only.

I am glad you liked it - I really have nothing against people who liked the film but I think you are making assumptions about why people didn't like the movie when people are clearly stating the reasons and that most of us agree with the others. I liked TFA, Rogue One and The original trilogy but this movie just didn't make the cut. I do think it is better than the Prequels but that isn't saying much. I am curious if you are younger and grew up with the prequels or if you are my age and were born in the 70s that grew up with the original - just curious

Just a side note - while it is true that there are a lot more people that haven't seen it but looking at the stats- Critics who rated it 94% were total of 269 reviews, Audience that has rated it at 57% are 64,000 so far

Just came back from the theatre. Holy **** did I hate this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy crap! They could have ended with "When You Wish Upon a Star"!!! What a missed opportunity :slap

First point: I think that's gonna be the difference. I saw Star Wars 10 times in '77 at age 10.

Second point: Facts is facts.

My sentiments exactly. I loved this movie if only because it challenged my preconceptions of what a SW movie should be. And it left me with little interest in the next (or future) episodes.
