One thing is certain you have been the most fair in your assessment of what didn’t work for you in this movie.

I agree with your final review on it but I just find the package as a whole to be more tolerable than the PT.

I think you make a great argument about lack of growth for a middle chapter.

Thanks Jye.. I try and be respectful to the fans of this film while getting my own critical views across.

My biggest problem with the movie remains Holdo getting the honorable death instead of Ackbar or Leia especially with Fisher’s death it would’ve just made more sense unless Disney thought it was disrespectful so then go with Ackbar.

Would have been a great moment for the Ackbar fans I think..

These parts still resonates with me.

Kylo telling Rey screw the dark and light side just burn it all down. Kylo improved for me tremendously.

Same for the very visually striking red guard battle.

It was visually cool.. I wish the payoff was better.. But it was a high point in the film for sure.

While it shouldn’t have been Holdo screw it that scene still has to be one of the most satisfying vehicle moments in all of the SW movies, silence instead of explosion.

Yes even though I liked them all in TFA Kylo, Rey, and Finn all improved tremendously in this film.

Even Rey's Mary Sue status was revoked. Her greatest triumph in TFA (catching Luke's saber against the will of the bad guy) was reduced to a comedic and humiliating thump on the back of the head by Snoke. She was powerless against Snoke without Kylo saving her and then when she once again tried to grab Luke's saber from him it was a draw causing the saber to explode. So I gained respect in Kylo's increased ability and appreciation for the fact that Rey was no longer Supergirl (IMO.)

I did like her better in this, though I did like her in the first film.. I still think the Mary Sue thing is there.. She is great at firing the blasters on the Falcon and moves a ton of boulders with little to no effort.. Again with no real explanation how she got so far with those abilities.. Plus she was able to walk away from all forms of temptation with Kylo and the Dark Side Sink Hole.

But I did like the moments you mentioned and Kylo's powers did increase which help set up a more fair fight in the next film.

I actually think that Holdo's death would have been too epic even for Ackbar. The only other contender would have been Leia IMO but I understand why they did it with Holdo since the whole point of her arc was that she was supposed to be a clean slate character whose competency was in question.

Ackbar has his fans though.. Would have been cool for them to get that moment rather then a fleeting comment.

I didn't mind the feminist messaging if you want to call it that because at the end of the day I don't think that Poe was put in his place by a woman other than his undoubted regret of openly calling Holdo a traitor. Even in retrospect I think that all of his ideas were sound and would have panned out if it weren't for two flukes (the bombs going off prematurely and then that pesky black BB-8 sounding the alarm.)

I think dramatically those scenes would have played so much better if it was between Leia and Poe or maybe even Mon Mothma, or maybe, Ackbar, or a General Lando

How cool would that have been? Who's side would you take?? There would be no assumptions on who is right and who is wrong. You would be stuck in the middle. Much better drama to be had.

I would still be annoyed if they kept the plan a secret but with those characters I might believe there is a good reason.. Or maybe I would just ***** that they ruined those classic characters by making them stupid
