From what I've heard the first part is 100% true, the cut that was shown to Hamill had Luke climb back up onto the rock and look out at the sea. They added an animated cartoonish figure disappearing and the robe blowing away in the wind later on. Come on look at the effect, it looks straight out of AOTC.

They say that after Fisher died Kennedy had a massive breakdown and came up with the assumption that Hamill could die before the last episode is completed. She got onto Johnson and they came up with the idea of Luke dying, changing Kylo Ren's lines in the force connection scene so he says force projecting kills the user.

Trevorrow was paid off after they reneged on the contracted condition that he had final say on the end scene, just as Johnson had with TFA. He had said many times that Luke and Leia would be central to the story, without Leia and then denied Luke his whole story went up in flames. He'd planned for a showdown between Leia and Kylo Ren, Mother vs Son but thought he could still salvage it with Luke vs Kylo as their battle in TLJ wasn't real. With that now denied to him and LFL breaching their contract they were left with little option but to pay off Trevorrow.

The sad thing is that all that matters to Disney and LFL is profit and they'll make far more than the budget, so they'll keep ****ing on the fans.

So the bottom line for Kennedy is $$$. She doesn't care about any of the actors/actresses who pass away.
Maybe she has her hands tied too (?). I don't know.

I can confidently say now, the worse thing that happened to Star Wars was when Lucas sold it. Sad.
