Aaron Paul reportedly cast in The Dark Tower | ShortList Magazine
A bit of obvious casting but I don't care. He is a good choice.

Hmmm... I always figured Eddie more like the long haired skater/surfer type... this guy doesn't give me that vibe.
But then again, I always figure Roland to be the Clint Eastwood type... :lol

I'm looking forward to being surprised by this adaptation.

Incidentally, has anybody read the comics?
Been meaning to take a look, are they good?

The comics are great. Definitely recommend!

Oh, I guess I forgot his name! Has he done much since?

Guess I could always check imdb

I have no idea. I just remover him from looper. He could be the little kid but then when he went all super saiyin, he got that real seriousness to him. Which would be perfect for later.

First shots of Idris Elba as Roland.

I am so incredibly apprehensive about this. I always saw Roland as scrappier, messier. Lean and lanky, dirty. The clothes aren't lived in enough, they should be filthy. All about context though I suppose. I'm still seeing this opening night, but for the moment I'm not optimistic.

Wow, didn't know this was actually happening. Every few years it seems that someone else comes forward attached to the part of Roland. Figured this was just another one of those stories.

Honestly, I really don't know if Idris is right for the part. As others have said I always pictured Roland as incredibly world weary and lean. An incredibly hard and brutal life has worn away any youth and handsomeness to the point that all is left is craggy, hard edges.

Good description, I saw him that way as well. Idris Elba is a fine actor, but he doesn't feel right for the part.

He just doesn't look grizzled enough. There's a reason that Eddie calls him old long, tall, and ugly. Because even though by all rights Roland is handsome, he's so world worn and burned out that it reflects in his appearance. Roland in those pics needs to be tied to the back of a truck and dragged around in the desert for a couple days. He's way too neat and tidy.

I never read the books. But just hearing this incredible cast, and this being one of Kings best works. I'm extremely exited. Especially for this being a new IP!

It's possible Elba chose to make this instead of becoming the new Bond, so it better be good!

I'm a bit concerned we haven't heard any casting buzz for Eddie or Susannah. If she ain't black, I'm gonna flip a ****ing table.

Yea, Susannah needs to stay black. I wouldn't mind if her dialogue were given a face lift though. Honestly King trying to "write black" (especially when she had the persona of Detta Walker) was probably the most cringe-worthy thing in that series.

So yesterday my friends and I were talking about the changes to the story, and an idea occurred to me. Seriously massive spoilers ahead.

So obviously in the books, Roland has repeated his quest for the Dark Tower countless times. Each time he reaches it he's sent back to the desert to begin his journey all over again. I wondered if perhaps in this film adaptation, instead of leaving the Horn of Eld at the Battle of Jericho Hill, Roland takes it with him. What if the films were not an adaptation, but a sequel? Roland's next cycle of his Dark Tower quest? While we all agreed that might be completely awesome and justify any changes, never in a million years did we think the studio would do that.

Then Stephen King tweeted this.

Holy. ****.

Elba is a great actor, but being a fan of the books (read them all), I don't really like the race change as I've always perceived Roland as he's depicted in the books and subsequent art and other material like the Marvel comics.

That being said - Roland's race is really irrelevant at the end of the day since it doesn't have much bearing on his character other than his physical description. Susannah/Odetta/Detta's race does so due to her multiple personalities and how each of those personalities are depicted...especially the 'Detta' personality that is overtly hateful towards white people and described as being 'stereotypical black'. Granted, the movie could completely change this and cast someone of another race but I hope they keep the personalities largely in line with the actresses' ethnicity.

Wow.....what a treat for the DT fans, a movie adaptation thats new for those who, have read it, and retains the story core for those who did not.....that might be the best twist to the long story that is the making of this film......
