As I recall, Roland's guns in the books didn't have interchangeable cylinders -- he simply reloaded individual shells.
I like his outfit, got the old West gunslinger crossed with a Knight vibe, bit of a regal Gilead look. Although I do agree it should be more worn.

And Bill Hader is an obvious choice to play Stephen King.
The direction this film has taken has broken my heart. I literally could cry.
Believe me, I know how over-dramatic that sounds, but the Dark Tower is one of my favorite stories, it may be my favorite story ever. I've read the whole thing like 3 times now.
I'm not racist. Idris Elba is one of my favorite actors working, I really wanted to see him a the new Bond. I've seen ****** films just to see him, but he is not Roland.
And the costume design is all wrong, it's supposed to have a western look to it, it's totally cool to break convention a bit and add some unusual modern elements, but he's supposed to look like a gunfighter, not a bounty hunter from Star Wars.
And If that's Jake, he looks too old.
As it stands now, I don't recognize Roland and that ruins it for me. It's very likely I won't see this film, unless I hear fans of the book raving about how good it is, only then would I go and see it.

Ugg, speedloaders? Roland reloads individual shells by hand. That is what made the shootout in Tull so good.
Outfit looks fine, this is an alternate of our wild west. Just needs to look far more worn.
Just read the books again. This movie doesn't take that experience from you.
Besides, it's not really an adaptation anyway. It's technically a sequel. There's no limit to the amount of changes they could make, and none of those changes would interfere with the canon of the novels.
Oh, I know. Because of the way the saga ended, I was totally not worried about potential changes to the source material. Then they went and changed the race of the main character....
The only elements that change each time, are solely based on Rolland's choices along the way. Race, gender, sexual orientation, geography, these things would remain relatively the same each time.
A great way to end the film would be to have Rolland blow the horn when he reaches the tower, finally completing his long journey, and giving the fans a nice little easter egg (and sparing us the sad ending to the book).

That would be a great ending.
The fact that he has the horn in this version suggests this will be the final loop.
After finishing book 7, I thought that the ultimate quest of the new/improved Roland would be to reach the Tower, blow his horn, call the names of his dead and then leave.
Forgoing the journey into the Tower--having realized the folly of such hubris--he'd travel back to the Calla and finally find peace with Rosalita.
After all those trips around the moebius strip, he'd have earned it.
But c'mon -- there's no chance Hollywood Howard will produce such a downbeat & introspective ending.
I notice he's got all his fingers . . . mayhap there are no lobstrosities at all in this version.
And the car styles look contemporary, so no time hopping to 1977, 1987, etc.
I wonder how much of the original tale will be jettisoned . . . it seems we at least have to see Blaine.
The Mono sequence was one of the most cinematic sections of the books.
Keep in mind the script writers are the same two maestros who wrote Batman & Robin and Amazing Spider-Man 2 . . .
