The sandalwood guns of Arthur Eld. Very nice.

As I recall, Roland's guns in the books didn't have interchangeable cylinders -- he simply reloaded individual shells.

Looks like this version will be loaded for Shardik:

He's projecting a strong Roland vibe in that shot.

Not sure if this is supposed to be Jake or not:

The direction this film has taken has broken my heart. I literally could cry.

Believe me, I know how over-dramatic that sounds, but the Dark Tower is one of my favorite stories, it may be my favorite story ever. I've read the whole thing like 3 times now.

I'm not racist. Idris Elba is one of my favorite actors working, I really wanted to see him a the new Bond. I've seen ****** films just to see him, but he is not Roland.

And the costume design is all wrong, it's supposed to have a western look to it, it's totally cool to break convention a bit and add some unusual modern elements, but he's supposed to look like a gunfighter, not a bounty hunter from Star Wars.

And If that's Jake, he looks too old.

As it stands now, I don't recognize Roland and that ruins it for me. It's very likely I won't see this film, unless I hear fans of the book raving about how good it is, only then would I go and see it.

As far as casting goes, these would be my picks.

Roland = No surprises here. Hugh Jackman or Karl Urban

The Man in Black = I can live with McConaughey, but I always pictured someone like Jonathan Price.

Jake = This is the only character I'm not actually too fussed about. It's really hard to find good kid actors. I would have picked Nathan Gamble. He did a great job on The Mist, and The Hole. The only problem is he's 18 now, and too old for the part.

Eddie = Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I picture him like he looked in Mysterious Skin, but a little older, basically the age he is now.

Odetta/Detta/Susannah = Zoe Saldana. I honestly pictured a woman exactly like Saldana, back before I knew who she was.

And Bill Hader is an obvious choice to play Stephen King. If you doubt it, I recommend watching "Creepshow" King acts in that film and it's eerie how much he and Hader look alike when King was younger.

Now that's the movie I can't wait to see.

I like his outfit, got the old West gunslinger crossed with a Knight vibe, bit of a regal Gilead look. Although I do agree it should be more worn.

I love the costume. I'm never bothered by changes. Slavish adaptations often feel stale to me. Ultimately the quality of the movie overall will make or break it.

You're not wrong. He reloads individual bullets faster than the eye can see, in the books. That said, I don't mind him replacing the entire chamber. Plus they look damn awesome on his belt like his:

It's definitely growing on me. Regardless, if Hot Toys grab this license, I'm all in.

That would actually be so great. I doubt they'll adapt those elements of the books though. It'd be amazing, but I really can't see it happening at all.

Ugg, speedloaders? Roland reloads individual shells by hand. That is what made the shootout in Tull so good.

Outfit looks fine, this is an alternate of our wild west. Just needs to look far more worn.

Just read the books again. This movie doesn't take that experience from you.

Besides, it's not really an adaptation anyway. It's technically a sequel. There's no limit to the amount of changes they could make, and none of those changes would interfere with the canon of the novels.

Looking a hell of a lot like the Gunslinger to me.

Also a first look at Jackie Earle Haley on set, as Sayre. Looks like they'll be doing Can-Toi effects in post. Hope that turns out good.

Yes! I totally agree.

All Gunslingers learn a trick where the bullets sort of stick to their fingers so they can reload the whole cylinder at once. I always imagined it as a sort of psionic static, like Spiderman, but King never explains how it works. "Trick" works for me, and leaves it to the reader to imagine, which I greatly prefer.

Oh, I know. Because of the way the saga ended, I was totally not worried about potential changes to the source material. Then they went and changed the race of the main character....

The only elements that change each time, are solely based on Rolland's choices along the way. Race, gender, sexual orientation, geography, these things would remain relatively the same each time.

A great way to end the film would be to have Rolland blow the horn when he reaches the tower, finally completing his long journey, and giving the fans a nice little easter egg (and sparing us the sad ending to the book).

Doesn't look anything like the Gunslinger to me. He's described as wearing clothes that are very old west in appearance. This outfit they gave him is definitely cool, but it looks like clothing from Star Wars. He looks like Blade to me.I think the guns look about right, but that's it.

I guess I can move forward on a Gunslinger custom figure now. I was waiting to see what the movie version of Roland looked like before getting started.

I see what you're saying, but I see it this way:
We know that Roland always gets sent back to the desert, pursuing the Man in Black. That's the loop - from the desert, to the Dark Tower. Clearly, whatever decisions he makes along the way inspire Gan or Ka, or whatever force has Roland trapped in this loop to help him out by making small changes to his journey. It can literally change reality, and the past, since by book's end he has the Horn of Eld with him. He wasn't actively sent back to Jericho Hill to collect it, it was gifted to him. No explanation. We're not given any indication of how this whole thing works at all.
So why is it so hard to consider the possibility that whatever force allows that to happen can't also affect his physical appearance, his entire upbringing, etc?

A great way to end the film would be to have Rolland blow the horn when he reaches the tower, finally completing his long journey, and giving the fans a nice little easter egg (and sparing us the sad ending to the book).

That would be a great ending.

The fact that he has the horn in this version suggests this will be the final loop.

After finishing book 7, I thought that the ultimate quest of the new/improved Roland would be to reach the Tower, blow his horn, call the names of his dead and then leave.

Forgoing the journey into the Tower--having realized the folly of such hubris--he'd travel back to the Calla and finally find peace with Rosalita.
After all those trips around the moebius strip, he'd have earned it.

But c'mon -- there's no chance Hollywood Howard will produce such a downbeat & introspective ending.

I notice he's got all his fingers . . . mayhap there are no lobstrosities at all in this version.
And the car styles look contemporary, so no time hopping to 1977, 1987, etc.
I wonder how much of the original tale will be jettisoned . . . it seems we at least have to see Blaine.
The Mono sequence was one of the most cinematic sections of the books.

Keep in mind the script writers are the same two maestros who wrote Batman & Robin and Amazing Spider-Man 2 . . .

Man I really hope we get Blaine. But we'll see. I'd love to see the Lobstrosities and though their part is small, it's memorable enough that most fans would be disheartened were they not included.

You're right about New York being contemporary, but last I heard, NYC didn't have blue taxis. Wherever Roland is meeting Jake, it's not OUR New York. I'm wondering if it's meant to be Lud (pre-apocalypse), or the alternate New York (home to Jake and Eddie Toren.)

The writer team is concerning. Akiva Goldsman is mostly terrible, but has written some decent stuff in the past. I know that Nikolaj Arcel rewrote the script, and his work on Dragon Tattoo was excellent, so here's hoping.
