Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

I probably have most of the songs on my iPod already. The score was cool though.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

Should've looked for this thread sooner, solid 7/10, it hits all the right notes in terms of paranormal stuff, being the paranormal nut that I am.

My favorite characters were the kids, although all characters were great.

Creature design was uninspired and meh, plot was pretty airtight, except for the intentional loose ends.

Ending was perfect, I read it was ambiguous? :lol in what way? Will has powers, 11 is in another dimension, Chief was contacted by men in black, what's so ambiguous about that? Obvious sequel bait.

Can't wait for season 2.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

Finished rewatching it yesterday, and still a solid 9 for me. It's by far the best show Netflix has put out until now, with none of the padding and weak/boring secondary characters that made me lost interest during some episodes of their Marvel series.

I'm still amazed on how they managed to get together a cast with that level of talent; the kids are amazing, but lets not forget Hopper here or the way Nancy subverts completely our initial impressions of her character...gotta give also a huge part of the credit here to the tight script. I'm a bit worried about a second season not being able to reach the high mark set by the first one, which could in some way be avoided by going with the anthology route. But on the other hand we know how that ended for "True Detective", and letting a cast like this go seems like a huge waste of potential...so I'm going to trust that the Duffer brothers really have got enough material for a direct sequel.

Just watched first episode last night. Liked the production. Will report back when completed

You're in for a treat. I just finished it today and I thought it got better and better with each episode.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

My wife and I loved it. Tried to space out the eps. over two weekends. Loved the poster-so 80's. They did a great job with keeping it in the decade.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

Just finished up about 20 odd minutes ago. Extraordinary series. So many things to wrap my head around but off the top of my head I gotta say the kids, the story, the execution, the atmosphere, the music--it all just makes for an absolutely brilliant eight hours of genre television. This is what that new X-Files season at the beginning of the year should have been--electrifying and heartfelt; instead that thing was an out and out travesty. Thank goodness here with Stranger Things that's not the case. The Duffer Brothers tapped into so many things. I was telling a coworker today there was about two dozen different films, tv series, books and video games all mixed together to bring this thing to life and it all somehow goes together and works wonderfully. Wow. Just wow.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

10/10.

Loved it. Millie Bobby Brown deserves a Golden Globe and an Emmy. She's superb as Eleven. Can't wait to see her in more.

Theories:

-The "Upside Down" is actually the future and not another dimension. "The Door" is a time portal to a post-apocalyptic future where WWIII happened and everything is covered in nuclear fallout. This explains why the atmosphere in the Upside Down is toxic, why everything in Hawkins is covered in debris & why all of the monster's prey comes from our world. There's nothing left to eat in the future.

-Will is the Monster. What we have here is a paradox where Will must be kidnapped & infected by his future self to then set the events into motion that will destroy the world via his infection (the Russians attack USA to stop the plague?) This explains why Will survived the monster unlike everyone else. *Will ran the game in Episode I and pulled the Demogorgon. I think this was foreshadowing to the villainous role he will play.

-Eleven is an alien. She comes from a society of fifth-dimensional beings who made contact with her mother whilst inside the tank during MK Ultra and impregnated her with a "Carrie" baby in an effort to save the world from nuclear holocaust. Ironically, it seems Eleven is responsible for said holocaust because she's the one who opened the time portal.

-Eleven is alive and can reconstitute. This may be why she's "011". Brenner may have destroyed her ten times and every time she reconstituted he branded her with a number.

Oh, yeah! I see all those as possibilities, especially the fact that "The Upside Down" is the post-apocalyptic future, possibly after a nuclear war between the US and Soviets. But I honestly bet that the larva that came out of Will, probably along with Will himself, is the reason for what happened--the infection, the creatures are everywhere, they are unstoppable, society collapses, etc... Yeah, I could definitely see Eleven as some type of extra dimensional being. We'll see.

For anyone who wants to take a look at another terrific piece of horror/scifi that deals with MK Ultra and also has a helluva lot of parallels to "Stranger Things," I would recommend the film, "Banshee Chapter" which was produced by Zachary Quinto. It's actually an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "From Beyond." But then again, I think "From Beyond" is definitely a big part of the DNA that makes up "Stranger Things."

How did I miss this? Someone who speaks my language :yess: And why are you banned?

This is a brilliant theory.

Cool, will definitely check it out!

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

I'm stupid. I got confused in first two episodes. I thought that girl was the missing boy haha. Totally makes sense now.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

It's not something that we usually do, but after the Suicide Squad mess I'm going to ahead and praise the execs in Netflix. In this age of movies designed by committee where even the director role has become irrelevant, it takes first vision to recognize the diamond in the rough that the Duffer brothers were selling (considering that they've got a really small filmography backing them) but even more it takes guts to give them complete artistic freedom to create the series as they originally envisioned it.

Yes, it sounds like a huge risk -because it's- and it's not going always to pay out. But when it does, like it has happened with Stranger Things, no movie designed by committee and tests screenings is going to even come close to it. So kudos to them for allowing the people who really know how to tell stories to do their job and making this show possible.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

I agree. Netflix really has some great shows going on. Wish they would make a live action TMNT.

Re: Stranger Things (netflix show)

To be fair, I'm finding myself being more excited for rumoured Netflix projects than actual movies. I'd love a Tomb of Dracula, or its modern equilavent, Carnage, to get the Netflix treatment.

I am too. Movies are still exciting but those modern HBO/Netflix shows really have been highly anticipated
