I don't see how it could. It was an isolated incident and considering online purchases aren't refundable, the ticket purchases count. Even before the incident, sales were already lower than expected. :huh

:goodpost: I agree with the isolated incident part, but I'm really confused about the second part about ticket sales being lower than expected. Last I read TDKR had the second biggest midnight opening ever at around $30 mil, behind only...HP7 pt 2.

Here's a read on it. What I find the most interesting is the foreign reaction to the event. There's a few mentioned in the link, but even more countries are doing the same now.

This still makes absolutely no sense. They were bragging about the presales and given most of the opening day shows were sold out everywhere and refunds aren't issued for chickening out of attending, it seems like they're blaming this incident for lackluster sales vs. it having any real effect on attendance.

This is true, but most of the presales were for Friday into Friday night and Saturday. I was reading box office mojo's report basically saying that Sunday would give an indication of actual ticket sales that weren't bought previously. So that's where you'd see something. Then again we won't know numbers until Monday.

They're already pointing blame though and Saturday ain't even finished yet. :dunno

My friend was able to get refunds for tickets that he bought for some people that didn't show up before a movie started a few times in the past.

They are talking about sales after the event occurred which haven't been reported. Just the simple fact that they are pulling advertising is going to hurt numbers from here on out.

Are they? Just saw a TDKR commercial about an hour ago and I bet if I go to the store, I'll see Batman on the Mountain Dews. Hell, isn't HUB doing a Batman the Animated Series Rises marathon still? :lol

"After the shooting, theaters tightened security, and Warner Bros. scaled back promotional plans, canceling aParis_premiere and appearances by the cast and crew in_Mexico_and_Japan.

Ronn Torossian, chief executive of New York-based_5W Public Relations_which is not involved with the movie's release, said it was smart for the studios to stay quiet in the early days after such a horrific event and he expected the marketing for upcoming, violent films like"The Expendables" to tweak their advertising. But by September, if not earlier, that will change.

"This will affect marketing movies in the short term," he said. "(But) the media has a very short memory, and it's something that in the long run will not affect" film promotion."

:lol:rotfl:lol:rotfl:lol That "impact" will definitely be felt worldwide. :exactly::lol:rotfl

I think a flea's toot would have more of an impact. :huh

so the Avengers will win by default, figures..

Hey now, that's a damn interesting point. Sounds like they're scared to go up against Avengers (which gets released in the coming week(s)) in Japan. And last time I checked Mexico wasn't really a huge box office contributor.

It'll have an effect, how big doesn't really matter. You seem to be calling out WB like they're hiding because of lofty expectations but it's every studio that has taken this stance, not just the people involved with TDKR.

No, I just think WB set unrealistic expectations on TDKR and when those expectations aren't met, they'll do what every other studio does in Hollywood and look to someone/something else to point the finger at rather than turn it on themselves.

Weren't there BS Al Qaeda bomb threats aimed at theatres and malls circulating around the release of TDK? Lord knows that sure as ____ didn't hurt the box office. :lol

Much like billions of hours in news broadcasting worldwide spent on a massacre linked to the film and shrinking advertising in its wake couldn't possibly have the inverse effect?:dunno

Because billions in free advertising couldn't possibly have affected the box office, right? :cuckoo:

Double edge sword there.

What is interesting is how selectively you are reading this whole thing.

In an "apples to apples" comparison between The Avengers' midnight pre-sale tickets (which didn't have a tragedy associated with it when it when most people bought their presale tickets) with TDKR's midnight pre-sale tickets (which also didn't have a tragedy associated with it when most people bought their presale tickets)...TDKR's opening presale take is almost DOUBLE that of the Avengers.

What is your explanation (excuse) for that?

Scared to go up against Avengers, when with a level field (no tragedy) it beats Avengers by $12 mil? :rotfl

Yeah, I'm sure that's the reason. :cuckoo:
