What I didn't get is how if the skull is weak the horn would function in defense...maybe I just can't get it..lol but if you build a weak structure then put a strong addition on it, the strong structure will break from the weak base. I suppose I need visual aides...showing places of breakage with too much stress. Are the horns of the beak and crest the same strength-wise ?

I really don't know how else to put it other than the difference between a lance and a battering ram. :lol That's really the simplest explanation. Think of it this way - the skull itself is relatively strong in terms of a ceratopsian, but those dual parietal fenestrae weaken the posterior portion of the skull, rendering it quite fragile and susceptible to breaks is subjected to stress. The anterior portion of the skull sporting the nasal horn has no such pitting and fenestrae and with the keratinous overgrowth is consequently the strongest part of the skull.

I understand horn locking and not needing the horns very strong for that purpose. It's using them to impale and slash with I was having trouble...say your lance is really strong..but the knight holding it is weak armed...the lance may strike home but there are going to be complications afterward.

So the nasal horn could be used for attacking an opponent and would suffer no problems due it's strong base. The frill horns if caught in a tyrannosaurs chest could possibly be torn off, broken, or cause the back part of the skull to fracture in a very abusive struggle ?

On the topic of the statues themselves, mine arrived like so many others with the beak a bit rubbed..no big deal a little dark brown took care of it.

I was also going through my calander and checking how much time between pieces...I noticed ( for me ) the time expanse from the Carno to the Rex to the Stryrac was about 9 weeks. I couldn't figure the Rex vs Trike Dio because I bought it later on. Can anyone else check their time frames ? If mine is a continuing pattern..then the Deinosuchus should be out about mid February ?

DAMMIT! :lol You're over-thinking it, so let me try to explain it again. The part of the skull that's doing the attacking is not weak. The skull is heavily fortified to absorb stress in impact anteriorly; the only weak portion of the skull is the parietal crest which would NOT have been actively engaged in the attack and serves a purely ornamental and/or possibly thermoregulartory purpose. Locking while attacking at close range is different from battering at an accelerated speed, it's a massive disparity in force displacement across the surface area in a portion of the skull not intended for that impact. If you ball your fist and punch an opponent your hand will endure minimal stress; if however you leave your wrist and fingers loose but still hurl your hand with the same ferocity you will cause a great deal of injury to yourself. When punching you have the potential to injure the weaker parts of your hand unless you're careful to protect the vulnerable elements in your attack and utilize the strong; that doesn't mean your hand is incapable of dealing a devastating blow, but rather that delivery must be executed with care and precision. And yes, as in any close combat in the natural world there is a risk to both individuals engaged in the quarrel. I hope that clarifies things a bit. :peace

The beak on my maquette was rubbed a little on the front as well. Nothing a little brown/grey paint couldn't fix.

As to the calendar dates, I'd check but I'm running on 3 1/2 hours of sleep so I'm much more inclined to just hit the hay. :lol

Sorry.. :lol Alright, I see what your saying. I think what I want to know now relies more possibilites and chance. Like.. if I were a predator and went for the parietal crest with say a kick or other force during an attack..what would it do ?

I think those dates might just help us in determining new release dates...or at least maybe approximate them. ;)

Get some rest bud, then come back.. :D

I figured we would have heard something around Christmas..and that's next week.

How about some speculation/general discussion ? ;)

I was looking over the Deinos measurements...that one is going to be pretty huge..I wonder how it will hold up ?

That water won't support all the weight of the Deino and Para..my only guess is the Deino is solid or weighted down inside where meets the water and the Para is completely hollow.

That crest of horns is meant to dissuade predators from what would have been an otherwise frail portion of the skull. An animal wouldn't think of kicking an animal equipped with that horn directly in the head.

As to when we might see the next Dinosauria piece, Sideshow's 12 Days of Christmas are fast approaching. ;) We'll get 12 upcoming product announcements. It's a safe bet.

A safe bet? So was Spooktacular, as I recall. :lol Still, I'm keeping my clawed appendages crossed, all the same.

If Sideshow follows the real 12 days of Christmas it'll be the 12 days between Christmas and January 6th.

Just got on the waitlist for the Styracosaurus Ex. a few days ago and it was converted to an order almost straight away. If anybody is still looking for one of these it's probably worth getting signed up for a Waitlist spot now.

TWIST! :lol You have a point there. I guess we'll be finding out soon, but those are a lot of announcement spots to fill, and originally we were supposed to find out 2 new Dinosauria pieces before the New Year. It'd be nice to have a new one revealed soon! :rock
