Knowing well the sources that Bleeding Cool have up their sleeve, I can promise you that their straight-outta-leftfield rumors will always have some kind of foundation. Very interesting, then, that today they’re dishing on a plan to set the fifth Terminator film in contemporary London. I suppose the ultimate accuracy of this story hinges, as much as anything else as there being another Terminator film. To an extent, it will also depend on the same creative team having their way with the next movie, and some might suggest that is now rather unlikely. Nonetheless, the London plan meshes with a previous McG hint quite nicely. That quote, and more, coming after the break.

Back in April, Film Journal ran their Terminator Salvation promo interview. Here’s McG on his plans for a follow up:

"I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a 2011. John Connor is going to travel back in time and he’s going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They’ve figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you’re going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be ^^^^ing awesome."

Hunter Killers laying waste to London? Well.. yes, maybe. McG certainly seems to be in love with Children of Men. I’m not convinced we’ll even be seeing another Terminator film any time soon, but if we do, this is as likely an approach as any other.

London’s a great location for post-apocalyptic landscapes and massive scale destruction, I think. Our architecture looks great with fat wafts of pitch-black smoke swelling up out of it and hordes of screaming, dirt-faced urchins teeming in the rubble. Maybe it’s because these are close to the popular images of the London of yesterday, and not just tomorrow.

There’s quite a tradition of dystopian or post-apocalyptic Londons too, from Children of Men to Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days and Weeks Later, or Will Self’s Book of Dave to A Clockwork Orange. Would be nice to have a Terminator slot into that set too.

One of the great advantages of setting a film in the UK is that we Brits have an enormous wealth of character actors that, for the most part, you don’t see taking up arms against cyborg armies. All the way from Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen to youngsters like Daniel Mays, Riz Ahmed or Harry Treadaway seem like rich, potential Terminator killers to me. Or how about (ahem) Jason Statham?

The thing I find ironic is that I popped in "Dumb and Dumber" right before I read this artcle. Coincidence? I think not. :D

More info.

We’ve known since the beginning that Terminator Salvation was being set-up to be the first film in a new trilogy of Terminator movies. We’ve been told that the ending of this new film might divide audiences, as McG that its “not a happy little bow of an ending at all. The ending is tough and requires reflection.” McG has even shared his idea of how he might bring T2 star Robert Patrick back for a cameo in the next film. But aside from that concept-in-progress, we’ve been told nothing about the story for the next film… until now.

McG tells the FilmJournal that he strongly suspects that Terminator 5 “is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011.” And the film is aiming for a 2011 release, how convenient. McG reveals that the story might follow John Connor traveling back in time on a mission to “galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion.” Okay, sounds a bit lame… until… wait for it… wait for it…

“They’ve figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. ^^^^ing awesome indeed… Just as we thought this was going to be a trilogy set in a post-Judgment Day, they change it up completely. The movie would then essentially be set at Judgement Day, in a tangent timeline. And yes, it is even more confusing than it sounds.

Judgment Day now becomes something else entirely. No longer is it the day that Skynet becomes self aware and launches a nuclear attack on the United States, Russia and China, but it now becomes the setting of a machine led invasion. What would this then mean for the other John Conner? You know, the 7-years younger version of Bale who is living in 2011.

I love the idea of setting the future war in modern times, but the concept will raise a lot of questions and probably require some convoluted answers. Also, according to Terminator 3, Judgment Day takes place in 2004. So how can 2011 be pre-Judgment Day?

Could really do with removing the links! But thanks

I put the links in to credit the source and to point the finger to the source. I also want to prove I didn't make this up. :)

Yep thats right ... T6 set in India ... You heard me correctly INDIA! where the slump dog battling T800s with stick and stones while Indian phone receptions hacking Skynet via dial up modem to bring it down! ~WORLD PEACE~ ;)

Reading that makes want a drink!
I'm all for T5 and love the possibility of it releasing in a couple of years, but I wanted the new trilogy to be all post judgment day, future war, eventually leading up to 2029. Not traveling back to 2011 and confusing the whole timeline even more.

I am not happy if all the info I posted in the spoilers turn out to be true. I can almost say that I would pass on seeing 5 and by default 6. Now that doesn't mean if cool Terminator collectibles come out of it that I won't get them. However, many of these "ideas" by McG suck.

Agreed! Not liking these ideas.
Why is he called "McG" anyway? lol, what's up with that?

Well i was hoping to see more Human vs mass T-800 future war but by the sound of his T5 idea you get to see even less Future war ... -_-;

Yeah I know...
That's the direction I thought we were headed in after Terminator Salvation.... No question.
I enjoyed T4, even though there's things I didn't care for, I liked it. I was hoping for a much darker T5, make it rated R. Have the war growing in intensity, looking more like the scenes we see in T1 and T2. Make us more emotionally connected to the characters etc... and finally have Skynet defeated in T6. But with each film, going forward to 2029.

Like seriously if MCG wants to go that direction then if Im Skynet i'd send a terminator back in time to kill Sarah's mum and dad before shes born... Gees...
