fairly simple, just be careful................totally takes this piece to another level.

Thanks Barry! :rock :rock :rock

Just to update those not-in-the-know, I ended up using material from this professional lighting gel swatchbook (which I obtained for free at a local stage lighting supply store):

After going through the dozens of choices, I found a nice dark brown color produced the best results. Installing it inside the figure is actually pretty simple.

First, unscrew the top, bottom-left and bottom-right screws to undo the lighting assembly. The bottom-center is for the battery compartment, so it can be left on. Then, carefully lift the whole thing out.

Next, remove the small black piece at the bottom and undo the silver screws holding the black plastic vertical bar holding the eye pieces in place.

Finally, after cutting the gel material into a slender, trapezoidal shape, I lay the gel right over the back of the white translucent eye piece, longer horizontal side on top. When putting everything back together, make sure not to replace the screws so tightly that the gel warps.

As you can see, that gel should not only create the right shade of amber in the figure's eyes as they looked on Threepio throughout the movies, but it should take down some of the excess brightness put out by those tiny LEDs.

So we get the gels samples from a specialty theatre lighting store? Damn...where the hell am I going to find one of those in Ottawa Canada?

Which shade from the swath is the right one?

Alright, I think I got it! After cutting up a dozen or so different gels from that swatch book and comparing them to movie footage, this is the closest shade of amber for Threepio's eyes I got:
I used #321 Soft Golden Amber from that Roscolux book

he actually sent me 2 gels.............an orange & a darker brown one...(i assume one was the one stated above).......i wound up putting both in. you can actually experiment a bit with them and see what you like best.

I think some folks have used different colors, but from my own experience with these gels, and what I see in the movies, I'd start with the full CTO (color temperature orange) gel.

Thanks guys. :hi5:

3PO shipped today. :thud:

Well hold off on the jealousy just yet. It was listed as "Like New" but who knows what condition it will be in. :lol

I ordered mine from Amazon warehouse last week that way too, except I paid $293 for it, also in like new condition. When I opened it, it looked to be brand new. I don't think anyone had even taken it out before. There were stickers on the side of the box to say it was used-like new condition. I have inspected it and only found 2 tiny little imperfections. From a normal viewing distance, you don't notice them.

Overall, I'm very impressed and super happy I paid about $100 less than retail for it. That being said, I'd say either this or the DX07 are my 2 favorite figures in my collection. Hope yours turns out just as good!
