I've had this on my wanted list since it came out, I just wasn't prepared to pay retail. I had secured a deal at under $200 at one point. Then another. Then an eBay auction which I would have handily won below $170 got screwed up because I changed my eBay ID a few days prior and forgot to update that info on my bidding platform (so login failed when it was supposed to auto-bid for me). I've had people asking me for a battery eliminator module for this guy for over a year and a couple of people even volunteer to send me the head from their figure. R2 was delivered to my mailbox last week and I figured I might as well have this guy at the same time and have the battery module also done at the same time.

You will be pleased, one of the best figures I own, and that's saying something considering it's pretty far from my favorite character of Star Wars.

The figure can also double as a lamp, the eyes are insanely bright.

Agreed. It never fails to awe me when I happen to glance over to it. Interested to hear your thoughts on it when you have it in hand.

I saw the SS version at Celebration and the Tamashi looks way better. I can't get over how good this figure actually is.

I may have to add a few resistors to my adapter to reduce the current and drop the brightness. ;)

Or you could add some brown-tinted gels inside, which will not only reduce the brightness of the eyes but get them to a more screen-accurate color.

I'm going to do that anyway, I sort of understood the bright comment as after the gels.

I kinda like the blue eye's that come with it. I know it's not screen accurate but kind of a nice contrast to the gold.

I saw someone (somewhere) replace the LEDs, which to me, is a lot more trouble than it's worth. Clearly Bandai/Tama used the wrong parts, but a gel is the easy fix for those that want it.

So Ahab, what's up with those photos you were going to put up of the piston work? ;)

Great looking backdrop - is that a bought or made item? Love the quality of the pics too - I need a new camera.

This figure really does photograph better (ie. "that looks like a pic from the movie") than any other fig I can think of.

I've been giving some thought tonight about how to weather this guy and keep the process reversible while also making it possible to handle the figure. So far I'm leaning toward using Polytek "Poly PVA Clear" (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) which is a water soluble sealant used in mold making. Tint this with food coloring and charcoal will hopefully allow it to be layered up to achieve the desired effect.

Anyone have any experience using this type of PVA (for anything)?

I have a prop of the Indiana Jones Headpiece that is made with 4k gold. It was too clean for me so I simply gave it a watered down brown acrylic wash which weathered it up quite nicely and is completely washable on the metal. I don't see how you couldn't just give the Tamashii Threepio an acrylic wash.

Maybe if I dilute it thin enough... But when the paint is close to opaque it's not very water soluble - I used to paint with acrylic a lot while in school, so I know it's really tough to get some of that off. Lots of nooks and crannies on 3PO. ;)

I don't think anything would be fully reversible - wouldn't it be still visible in the deeper crevices?

A brush should get that out - this stuff dissolves completely with water. I don't think I'd want to completely reverse it, I'm thinking more of modifying or improving it later.
