Oh, yeah, it does make sense to let this thread die until we hear some bit of good news. Sorry bout that.

Someday, pixletwin, someday.

What's up, fellas?

:lol nah, better to post and keep the dream alive than to give up all hope

My GF just bought the clock to go with this. Sad when you think about it.

I personally am too picky to have them on the same shelf, but a bit of a tidy up with some sandpaper and paint would do it wonders. I might end up doing just that if Bandai shelve their plans.

C-3PO sold well though didn't it? So why no R2?

Edit: just read in another thread that Bandai want to do R2 on their own? WTF?

I'm not sure 3PO did sell all that well? There must've been quite a few returns. And it's still readily available months after release. I'm not fussed about Bandai going solo, so long as they do get to it. It's one of the few figures I'd still get new-to-the-game excited about.

Really hope this will happen...it seems with the new Disney ownership everyone is wanting their own piece of the pie toy license wise.
The very same reason hottoys is waiting on release of their Anakin Skywalker. No royalties to SC means more profit.

Some companies are expecting/hoping for that. Amusingly, it's not disney they need to deal with, but hasbro, who holds EXCLUSIVE rights to all action figures star wars.

Hot toys has already been cozying up to them.

I guess my question is, should I pickup this 3PO off ebay (with free shipping) from Japan, or hold out and see if Sideshow does a more affordable version down the road?

I kinda wish SSC would do their own droids and maybe a two pack of Jawas.

I wouldn't wait on SSC's version and would definitely vouch for spending the bit extra on Tamashii's 3PO. Once you have it in-hand, you'll be happy with it. It really is an amazing piece.

The only thing wrong with this piece is not having R2 next to it :)

Are there any reputable dealers selling these. I'm a bit leery about buying this off ebay.

Do we even know if SSC is doing their own? Are they still being vague about this release?

Anyway, get the Tama. It's as good as a Star Wars collectible can be.

The only way I'd buy one from SSC is if it was weathered or something...

Good points. :goodpost:

It'll be a real shame if this line ends after one figure. The C-3PO is fantastic and I'm
sure their R2 would be equally impressive. I'd love to see Tamashii do a Stormtrooper with all the proportions spot on too.

Sideshow might do a more affordable version but this is the ultimate C-3PO, it's perfect.

Why don't Sideshow make an R2 right now to match this C-3PO seeing that Bandai are holding off?

Becuase Of a laundry list of reasons I've said over and over agin.

The truncated version:
Diecast is a cheap materail
Diecast makes things needlessly heavy, and prone to fall over.
Diecast is prone to paint chipping.

I'll wait for the eventual sideshow, OR hot toys version.

Your original comment was that there was an overuse of diecast, as if having a mix of plastic and diecast was a better design.

I understand some don't like metal, I get that some feel it's prone to fall over, although my C3-PO has never fallen over as much as my plastic figures, Sideshow sand/stormtroopers being impossible to stand on their own, but I don't understand the argument that having a mix of plastic and diecast is better.

Either do it in all diecast or all plastic. Your mixed media argument doesn't make sense to me, but your general complaint against diecast does, sort of.

In the movie, C3-PO and R2 weren't plastic, so I don't understand the argument of being needlessly heavy. I feel that the weight gives it a true sense of value, for the money, and realism compared to the plastic figures.

... Here we go again. Incomming wall of text. :lol
Spoiler tags for those who have read this before, and don't care to see it again.

Lets go little by little, and go into more detail, starting with the highlited part.

No, they were plastic and fiberglass. UNLESS you mean within the universe of the film, in which case they are alien materis, some metal-like, some plastic-like.

these are toys. They don't need to be heavy. The "Weight = value" thing that some people have ( I get that you're in that grouping, and I PROMISE I mean no offense by what I'm about to say) Is dumb. it's something, however, that is somewhat widespread. Some People associate a lack of weight or heft with cheapness and Poor quality. This is amusing, as the opposite is usualy true.

Die-cast itself is a specific material Known as "Zamac". Zamac is a Cheap alloy composed of mostly Tin, with some added copper and nickle, and in some cases Lead for added strength and weight. In the world of metalurgy, Zamac is considered a "garbage metal" becuase it's cheap to produce, and generaly low quality. In jewlry making, it's known as "white metal" and is frequently used to train people to make jewlry as it is extremely inexpensive. Modern Zamac has less impurities, and is less prone to " zinc crumble" than older stuff. this is when it starts to break down and become VERY brittle. While rare, it CAN still happen.

IT also holds paint BETTER than older zamac, but it is still prone to paint chipping in areas that are handeled frequently.

I WILL say that while Die-cast as a material is cheaper than plastic, and costs less to produce, the initial set up of getting the equipment is MORE expensive. This is usualy where people argue that Diecast is more costly.

Diecast if used improperly on an action figure can lead to balance issues. Generaly it's best to limit diecast to lower legs and feet to INCRESE stability, by lowering the center of gravity/balance point through the increased weight. Other than that, Diecast can be used to create very small pieces that are sturdier than plastic parts of a similar size ( 3P0's arm pistons, for example)

Corporate entities are aware of the " Weight = value" mentality, ad will frequently use diecast in collectables as an excuse to drive up the price.

Which means that the piece then becomes OVERPRICED for what it is.
Which means they're borderline taking advantage of you.

yours Hasn't Fallen over? that's great. For me, I have Pets, and children who run around the house and frequently crash into things. This means that anything that is even MILDLY unsturdy is going to topple in the event of a collision. That's not a chance i'm going to take.

Alternatively, I've never had an issue with my sideshow Troopers, clones or stormies, nor my Vader. I've had ANH han take a tumble, along with HOt toys spidey, and Thor, and some of my joes.

Mixed media is discussed above. Though, I will say that I would PREFER an all plastic 3P0. Sideshow or HT will eventualy deliver on this, and i'm fine with waiting. I've got some serious bills to pay off ATM, and I'll be taking a LONG break from collecting once my standing pre-orders are filled :D
