James Cameron’s Terminator Trilogy Reboot – Arnold Will Pass Baton to New Characters

Well, Jim Cameron will do what he wants to do because he is after all James Cameron but it was always an option to introduce new characters and how better than to “pass the baton”.

But now, ahead of 3D theatre re-release of T2 next month, Cameron says he is in negotiations to oversee a new “three-film arc” if the ongoing issues with the rights to the franchise can be resolved. The rights to make the films have changed several times since the release of the first film, but under US copyright law some rights will revert to Cameron in 2019. Schwarzenegger would be involved “to some extent” in the proposed trilogy but the plan would be to introduce new characters to “pass the baton”.

Hmmmm…

“The question is — has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up?,” says Cameron. “Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence).

“So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it.”

“We’ll put more meat on the bones if we get past the next couple of hurdles as and when we announce that.”

So, this doesn’t look like a true Terminator 2 Sequel and it is a reboot. It may or may not keep T1 and T2 in the canon but… this is still technically a reboot.

“I think it’s fairly widely known that I don’t have a lot of respect for the films that were made later,” Cameron says. “I was supportive at the time in each case for Arnold’s sake because he is a close friend. He has been a mate of mine since 33 years ago so I was always supportive and never too negative. But they didn’t work for me for various reasons.”

If the reboot fails, and we once again have a single movie that was supposed to be the beginning of a trilogy, then along with Salvation and Genisys we'll actually *have* a trilogy. A trilogy of failed trilogies.

Truly, that would make one hell of a historical moment.

The Terminator franchise officially has the most unsuccessful attempts at reinvigorating interest in the property.. that ironically involves time travel. It's like Marty McFly accidentally hit the gas and time traveled to 1955 three times and Doc Brown finally saying, "Great Scott Maybe you shouldn't have been born!"

:lol I'm actually looking forward to seeing how ****ing bad this series can go.

A trilogy of trilogies that never were..and Terminator 3.

Terminator 1 and 2 will go down as one of my favorites movies ever made (specially Terminator 2) but these recent movies did a disservice to it and it will be impossible to resurrect this franchise after this. Although I can't stand Terminator 3 (due to the bad and forced comedy plus that sad excuse and terrible portrayal of John Connor) that movie still somewhat redeeming, story wise. All movies after that one should have taken place in the future. As much as the Terminator story is great and all, there is only so much you can do until you paint yourself into a corner. You either beat Skynet or you don't. If they had focused in the future they could have taken the story much further. Probably get another 3 movies in the future then if you want, reset the story and start again.

Genisys is proof that they have no clue what do to with the story anymore. It's done.

I said this before and I'll say it again. Just watch the alternate ending of T2 and consider the story finished.

I went to see The Terminator because it starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. I went to see Terminator 2 because it starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and because he was reprising his role as the Terminator. I went to see 3, Salvation and Genysis only because they were Terminator movies. Once the focus was taken off Arnold, the movies just failed. A reboot will fail as well because the focus won't be on the one TRUE Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger. They're doing a reboot of the Matrix. I have no intention of going to see it. Why redo such an iconic series? It's doomed to failure.

I see that the new 4K T2 release will be the theatrical cut only (the other versions will only be on the separate blu-ray disc included with the 4K release.) So I have to assume that the new 3D release will be the original theatrical cut as well.

My custom made diorama (not made by me) of an emotional goodbye in T2. 60 cm tall. Not the best photos but I can live with it. "it has to end here... or I am the future."

"It's over... Goodbye."

It looks great. I just bought the last one - probably the same seller - luck_day2005?

I might actually use it for the NECA figure to make it look bigger. My Hot Toys figure is holding the control box for the chains as made by DoggieDoc.

Damn it a-dev, you would get the last one. :lol

Send a link this way brother, maybe he'll re-list them. Probably not though.

Like the old days of me buying up everything Terminator-related. I'm much more judicious now but I've watched this one for long enough and those recent pics sold me.

As a diorama it's not great - you can't hope to recreate that environment properly - I look at it more as a really cool scene-specific display base. It gets the idea across, people will instantly know what it is.

Agreed. It definitely gets the point across. I guess someone could make a larger scale one to be more screen accurate but who has the type of space for that? I like your idea of using it with Necas figure too, That might look more impressive overall. Or figure out a way to just display the thumbs up hand from the T-800s final
moments.

That's the only way I'd use the DX13's thumbs up hand, being a man for scene accuracy. Even his head was submerged by the time he does the thumbs up so technically all you need is a forearm with jacket sleeve and that hand.

That actually seems like that would be relatively easy to accomplish too. Hmmm....

No, I didn't buy it from Ebay. Unfortunately, as the one on Ebay was actually cheaper than what I paid for it. I bought it from someone in Japan, before discovering the one on Ebay. I paid 268 USD for it, ex shipping and import duty :-( Thought it to be a one of a kind at that moment, and that it was so expensive for that reason. However, that was not the case after discovering more of them on ebay.
